Absolutely agree!!!! Persistence and initiative is the key. Very rarely have I encountered a Peregrino who slept the night outside, and it usually was their choice.
7x down this trail and I never found it to be an issue. There are many more precarious descents on CF. I think the main problem is people out of condition get worn out coming up over the hill and down to Roncessvalles. Then they are sore and stiff and tend to hop down rather than methodically...
Yes, I passed through there a couple weeks ago. Due to Wisepilgrim saying it was closed I booked a hostel. Trekked to the albergue to find it fully renovated and open. I asked the hosts to contact WP administrators and request corrections.
I reserved a bed in an albergue in Sarria 5 days ago at 1500 by phone. Arrived 1830 to find only 5 others in the large, very nice albergue. We all got lower bunks well spaced. Walked into the next 3 Albergues after 1700 on the way to Santiago with no reservations and got entire dorm room to...
I find plenty of solitude on CF, even in the busy seasons. I start walking between 0600-0700, and at a bit faster pace (physical challenge). Sometimes I do not see anyone for 2-3 hours. Just keep walking until 1800 or later each day. Usually by 1400, 90% of the people are off the trail, and...
Love that idea, but presumably you (if a Pilgrim) have also been invited to leave by 0800. Maybe grab and go about 0759😁...and snag those half full bottles of vino and orujo!
Well, the historical path got many portions paved over by Franco. If you like long straight path next to lots of commercial traffic, take it. The alternate is much quieter and goes through plenty of small villages with cafes and albergues.
In 2021 I started SJPP 20 June and continued to Santiago, then Muxia, then Finisterre by third week of July. Hottest day was arrival Finisterre when temp went over 90 degrees F. There were a few days in the upper 80's along the way, but most peaked in the 70's. A couple nights were downright...
"Mind you, you could always amble back down to wine tap to amuse yourself!!"...and you could go a couple km ahead and climb the hill to Castillo de San Esteban de Deyo; not necessarily in that order😀. But do stay at Helena's albergue, the one place I stay on every CF.
Thank you Gary for volunteering to help. I definitely agree with planning and prep, but also like to keep my travel schedule loose as promoted by numerous other forum members: Land in Madrid on certain date, get to SJPP and then walk to Santiago. Depart Santiago on a certain date, but even that...
Good Day Henrick, I will speak from my experiences having done the CF from St Jean to Santiago many times.
I have seen no general meeting point to start the CF. I think most just leave from their auberge or hotel with acquaintances they recently met, the group they arrived with or by...
You have plenty of time to walk the whole thing. I would never recommend anyone skip the Meseta or bus/taxi any of it....or any part of the Camino for that matter. Most of the busigrinos complaining about the Meseta never walked it.🤣
Depending on what time you land in Madrid, you could fly to...
