Leon is lovely! Enjoy it!
Here is a recent thread about places in Leon and reviews-

In the above thread, I personally recommended Hotel Paris. Not the cheapest but they really take a good care of you and the location is...
I think that on the Camino your intentions, words, and actions are going to determine how people treat you, not where you are from. Overall, the Camino is full of wonderful, good people who really show and demonstrate the great things about mankind. This forum is a great example of the...
Here's one recent discussion-

As a whole, I recommend taking a sleeping bag.
Buen Camino!

What a great idea! There are some pictures that I recognize here... :)
Tough choice, I go with two pictures...
1. My very first step on the medieval path in SJPP (notice the clean boots!) ;)

2. The magnificent path and...
You can do as you please. If you're starting in SJPP, you can get a shell for a small donation at the pilgrims office. If you prefer to bring/buy one before arriving in Saint Jean or if you have a special shell you wish to take, you can do that, too. As Anniesantiago mentioned, you can also...
If you have the luxury of taking your time, I agree with others, spending a couple of days in Santiago is a wonderful opportunity and can provide a great closure. I met with a bunch of pilgrims I first met 5 weeks before, on our first night in Orisson. I then haven't seen most of them for the...
I took very good sunglasses AND a wide hat and I strongly recommend not compromising when it comes to the Spanish sun. I used my sunglasses every day and there were 2-3 days that I also found my sunglasses handy in protecting my eyes from some dust and blowing sand.
Buen Camino!

The entire five weeks that I walked, I always had private showers. The only two exceptions were Zubiri and Hospital de la Cruz where there was still separation between men and women, but for each gender, all showers were in the same space without doors/curtains separating. I haven't stayed in...
Hi Jay,
As others mentioned, this is one of the best things about the Camino...if you travel by yourself, you'll be able to enjoy the solitude (when desired) mixed with the great people you'll meet along the way. I think the most important thing is that it's your path so within the first few...
Laurie, thanks for the link...I remembered I responded to a similar thread not too long ago :)
Sheila, below is my response from the same thread that Laurie mentioned. I absolutely loved Leon-- taking it easy and enjoying the city would be such a great way to start the Camino! Hotel Paris is...
I join most of the comments here-- I loved the meseta! Quiet, serene, warm, sometime bare, and surprisingly, full of surprises :) If you choose to walk it after all, taking enough water and walking at your own pace while letting your mind express anything that comes up will make it all much...
Good luck! And remember, there are always lots of good people along the way to give a hand :)

Hi Sunsetwest,
First, no need to stress out! :) Second, many less experienced/less fit walkers are able to complete the stretch-- you just follow your body's pace and needs. Third and best of all, you always have the option of stopping at Orisson, on the way to Roncesvalles. I walked last...
With everything on the list, it added up to 8.5 kg, water included (1 kg). I was very happy with what I took-- I used everything I took with the exception of emergency antidiarrheals...which I'm glad I didn't need :) So in terms of taking too much stuff, there was really nothing left unused...
Hi MCVet,
I walked mid June-mid July last year. Before going, I looked through multiple packing lists and then created my own, which was some mix of everything I read, plus things that were important to me. You can find my list at...
Dear redwahine,
Congrats on getting ready for your first Camino! It's a great start... :)
SJPP is beautiful, but if it means you'll need to rush or can't make it to Santiago, I'd choose starting elsewhere. If your time is set for 4 weeks, I, too, recommend as others to start later, Pamplona...
Hi Mark,
Arriving in the evening, chances are the volunteers at the pilgrims office will guide you to the albergues that will still have vacancies. I stayed at a simple albergue (can't remember the name) in St. Jean and throughout the Camino and about once a week I treated myself to a nicer...
If you mean in terms of getting by, you'll have no problem on the Camino Frances. It's accommodating enough and many pilgrims don't speak Spanish at all. My experience was that there were plenty pilgrims speaking English and the amazing thing was that you're able to communicate with pilgrims...
If you're walking in the summer, keep in mind that there's still light on the Camino until fairly late. I had nights where it wasn't fully dark yet at 9:30-10pm. The latest I personally walked was 6:30pm, and from a personal standpoint, I wouldn't recommend walking at night. Not sure if...
Many albergues have books (sometimes in many languages!) where you can exchange your own. You can often exchange with a fellow pilgrim, too. I personally brought a book with me, thinking that I would read in downtime like you, and ended up realizing after 2 days that I wasn't going to read and...
