Might be a good idea to keep in mind for your planning that Semana Santa 2011 (Easter Holy Week) falls on April 17-24th http://gospain.about.com/od/semanasantaeaster/a/santa_dates.htm. On those dates, Santiago de Compostela will probably be pretty busy.

Easter week traditionally has been considered the "start" of the season on the Camino. In one week, people have enough time to start from Sarria (115KM) and reach Santiago to receive the Compostelana Certificate. A little planning now and you'll be fine - enjoy it!

Starting from Burgos with a couple built in "extra days" is going to be much more of a challenge - 15 days to cover 500 KMs (300 miles) - than Leon (versus 300 KM's or 180 miles).
It all depends on your physical ability, but I'd say start from Leon, take your time and enjoy...

Leon is 310KM's from Santiago, so you will definitely qualify for the Compostelana. How much time do you have? If you plan on starting from Leon, allow yourself about 2 weeks.
As for shoes - that's a personal choice, but I say go with comfortable, well broken in light hiking boots...
