Annie, I'm getting $1000 from here in Florida, and $1150 from Portland.
Try Matrix (http://matrix.itasoftware.com/). Lots of options. You have to go to another site to purchase, but it gets around the cookies thing.
Walk to Sahagún from wherever you want to start. Take a train to Astorga (passes through Leon). You'll gain about 4 days and will have walked most of the best part of the Meseta. You'll miss Leon, but whatever.
The other thing you might do is set a date to be in Sarria, one that is compatible...
The ferry dock is right in Santander Central. Nice residential and business area, with lots of lodging and dinning options. If you have to wait for the ferry, it should be a pleasant wait. If possible, walk up the Rio de la Pila ad take the inclined elevator for a magnificent view of the city...
Doug, since I was shipping exactly what I would have carried into Spain in excess baggage, it is difficult to see how I was violating import regulation. Nothing I was taking was for resale, so my conscience is clear.
I would think that a diligent official would have reviewed the documentation...
Here is the short version of my 'horror' story from 2012.
I mailed 3 boxes of gear and gifts and stuff to my cousin in Santander, 10 days before our departure from the U.S.
We were going to visit Santander before heading to Sarria, and return there after Santiago. No brainer, right.
Except...
Yes, I went back and tried to go through the purchase screen for 30 Sept. No Problem.
But for the next day, 1 Oct., I got the same "Ticket is not available on the Web." message.
James, if you have not made your flight reservations yet, look at booking through to Pamplona, and returning from Santiago. You might find that the fares are worth it. (I'm assuming your departing from the U.S.) From Pamplona, there are buses and taxis available.
Otherwise, take a train.
From Dublin (timing is everything), if you can get to Santander, you can take a train to Palencia, then transfer to a train to Leon/Astorga.
This was my planned route if we had to break up our Camino into 2 phases. Santander to Astorga should be about 6 to 8 hours, I'm guessing.
leilaria, are you traveling to Santiago first, then going east to Leon?
I don't know where you are coming from.
The train is comfortable and convenient.
Andrew, we are walking in Oct., and will break at Sahagun. Then train to Santander to see family.
The route is Sahagun to Palencia, Palencia to Santander.
We're looking at having a short, half day walk into Sahagun, catching a mi-day train, and being in Santander about 1900 hours. Hope that...
GPJ13, we are planning the same start for October 2014. Did you find the buses to be a good choice? Any problems or additional info you can provide?
Thanks and Buen Camino.
