If you have only 2 weeks then concider starting from Aviles.
The nature is beautiful, you do not need to worry about booking everything and no mountain challenges for quite a while.
You get Asturias + Galicia. The best combo meal you can order.
I took a train from the French side to Hendaye and walked from there myself, BUT people who I met on the Norte took the train from Bilbao and loved the views. You will see the trail :)
Santander is one of those places a lot of pilgrims sleep in. It would potentially be a bottleneck, but because like half of the people take the train out of the city then there is no need to book ahead. April is definetely off season for the Norte.
I would say that the best part of the Norte is still ahead of you. The Asturias region was amazing! Especially once you start going past Aviles.
Here is my Norte experience from 2023:

Noja to Laredo has several walking options. I went with my route option first towards Isla. Near Arnuero the road reaches back to the highway.
From Ajo to Glizano I chose to walk the route option closer to the ocean. Not that many views to the ocean but way better than going along the highway...
From Muros onwards you only have fantastic nature days. Even when you start going inland towards Santiago, it will still be great every single day.
I went always as close to the ocean as possible. I can't guarantee that the other route options are as good.
Just finished a few hours ago. Feels amazing!
The second part of the Norte I liked even more than the first.
Muros de Nalón was just the real start of the Camino :) Tomorrow a bus trip to Fisterra and hopefully will see a sunset at the lighthouse ♥️
I just wanted to add here that there are currently a lot of pilgrims continuing the Norte from Avilles. Appatently the albergue there is almost full a lot of the time (it hosts like max 50 people).
Many pilgrims are booking and reserving places ahead on the second part of the Norte. The...
Note: There is a road construction on the pilgrim route from Pesués to Unquera. Pilgrims need to take the highway sidewalk between these two places. There is a dedicated red walking zone for pedestrians.
There was a great "forest alternative" route as locals called it today. It starts right before La Alcebosa and goes straight towards Serdio.
I attached image of the trail map.
It was 2km shorter than the original route that goes also through Hortigal, but the forest route was completely on...
I just passed Santallana del Mar today and really recommend people stay there in the former cloister.
There are not that many open albergues here in the area. Either temporarily closed or opening only for July and August.
Most manageable (and nicest walk) idea is to take the train out of...
Some pilgrims got the recommendation to take the train out of Santander to Santa Cruz de Bezana and from there walk to Santallana del Mar.
Its still a long day, but quite a good experience this way.
I walked past Santallana del Mar today and wished that I had stayed there last night. Very...
Also lots of pilgrims I have talked with will also stop walking in Bilbao. Things should become very relaxed.
PS. Im pushing all the way to Portugalete tomorrow using the riverside walk. Really looking forward to the gondola bridge.
Im hoping to stay at the monastery in Zenazurra tomorrow. There are only 21 bed places so I'm a bit worried about crowds. Altough in the cow shed seems to be today just 2 pilgrims.
How many people started on the same day as you in Irun? I had about 30-40 people.
Im glad people are finding it helpful.
I really recommend the alternative routes between Zumaia and Deba. I did just the first part today. I thought there would be too much of mud and rock for the second half.
Yellow arrows did not point the way to the first part right next to Zumaia (next to...
Im on the Norte right now. Doing just fine with my gear list (I travel light):
http://caminopilgrim.travel.blog/2023/04/12/gear-packing-list-camino/
I did buy a pair of hiking sticks at Leire Sport in Irun in addition to the items on the list. Sticks will come in very handy in the first week.
Im doing my second day on the Norte as I write this. Going along the trail I make video clips and post them in real time.
Instagram page:

Videos are under stories. They last just 24 hours before the system removes them. This way you are...
I'm starting Camino Norte a few days after you. I got my credential and seashell this time from the Forum Store :)
However, I am certain that the Irun Pilgrim Albergue also doubles as a location to get the credential. I'm hoping to get my first stamp there and also stay without pre-booking...
