Overall, a blizzard of consumerist jargon.

Remarkably, it's illegal in Europe too. Were you concerned enough to complain?

    The ten essentials for hiking

Actually this book is a wilderness notebook and inappropriate for caminos. 'The' camino is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a wilderness. The list below does not take into account the time of year nor the particular camino taken, and like others, I can see a fair number of items which...

    Who Needs a Backpack When.....

Ah! Davey, you've just talked yourself out of a bed for the night in any albergue. No dogs allowed!

    Unexpected hiking boot pain

Try again but don't lace up the top two lace holes. This allows some ankle movement without the boot pressing hard on your ankle with each step. I seldom lace all laceholes, and certainly not with new boots. I find this effective. Good luck

    Backpack too small?

Hi Heather I was surprised that in the responding posts that no-one mentioned that your shoulders shouldn't take the weight, the hip belt does. The hip/shoulder ratio is around 70% / 30%, perhaps 80/20. If the weight is on your shoulders then it's not fitting right. The supplier should have...

    Boot Dilemma

Hi M Can I suggest that you don't go so much on the commercial and advertising side of walking and associated equipment, but rather avoid brand names, commercialism or expensive publicity and go for what feels right on your feet? It may be that this will ensure a better walk? Quien sabè? Please...

    Boot Dilemma

Well said Kit! This is a section which is beautiful in fair weather but you are right to point out the real deal here. The boot compromise issue is a difficult one. I've walked this section 4 times and agree with you on boot choice.

    Dazer against dogs?

No david you dont throw stones unless they are on the point of launching an attack. However, if you had thrown McLaine's book or even just showed it to the dogs, I think they would have turned in terror and ran for miles. Theyre not stupid you know:they knew you had this book and hid when they...

    Dazer against dogs?

You may indeed love animals but I think that when a dog has its teeth into you, hanging off your arm or backside ,then you may wish to reconsider. You will actually "be able to do that" when you are about to become lunch. Ask a postman, as above. Alternatively you could smother them with love -...

    Dazer against dogs?

I tried a dog dazer and it was ineffective. I cant stand the brutes though I do like a nice well cared for dog. You need a variety of techniques, IMO, from raising a stick to whacking them with that stick. Or, reaching for a stone, real or not. If you have a stone, hit them with it. With...

    Boot Dilemma

Re: Re:Boot Dilemma Chris, your post is all about suffering and the OP wants as far as possible to avoid suffering, wise woman that she is. You mention suffering three times, in among the blisters, aches and pains. And....you conflate suffering and rejoicing. Oh Chris. I remember, in San...

Sleeping Bag or just Silk Liner??

I can only tell you what I did last November on the Camino Portugues. Not wishing to carry a sleeping bag, I took a cotton sheet bag (your silk is better) and a survival blanket (the silvery thing).* I hoped to find blankets, but if not then this was my method. On two nights there were no...

    Hiking Shoes, or Hiking Boots?

Good advice, C, for those who wish to use the thread method. I hope you can avoid blisters next time, because they are such a drag if they're any way big. You're right that the blister hole seals itself; I used to remake the hole each day. However, an odd thing is that tho' I occasionally got...

    Hiking Shoes, or Hiking Boots?

The idea of passing a thread into the blister and leaving it there is one which I heard a while back, yet it is one which I suggest will lead to easy infections. The thread is unlikely to be sterile, and anyway may pass bacteria from the shoe, by the thread into the blister, when left in...
