Revised Spring gear packing list (after VdlP)

Yes, in mornings I would wear the rest. As the day goes on, I would add clothes from me to backpack. Temperature rose during the day quite a lot. Especially in the South. Sunscreen was essential to protect my skin once I was hiking in just shorts, t-shirt and the buff neck gaiter that I wore...

Revised Spring gear packing list (after VdlP)

September should be very warm. Daily hiking in a T-shirt should be good. I wore the same shirt every day for hiking. Technical shirts are super easy to handwash and dry fast. In mornings I wore my rain jacket too, but on the revised list I replaced a rain jacket with a poncho. The evening...

Revised Spring gear packing list (after VdlP)

I just finished the VdlP from Seville to Santiago in 28 days. I was travelling light. I did do 10-14km walks at home daily for about 8 months to prepare (multiple smaller walks in Winter time instead of 1 longer one). My original packing list did not fully take into account how the rain and the...

    Gortex or No -Gortex Shoes

Concider taking a pair of waterproof socks with you instead of goretex shoes. Most days you will not need the goretex anyways. Your normal Hokas will at least dry out nicely if it does happen to rain.

    New lightweight backpack from REI

Looks great! I have also switched towards ultralight versions of backpacks. Being an European I focus on hand luggage sized options though. Anyways, this 50L options seems to have a solid back ventilation, solid belt pockets and really good mesh pocket on the back.

    Comments on my packing list?

I just finished fine tuning my packing list for Via de la Plata in March. All my gear (including the stuff I wear) total under 5kg. Its maybe too minimalist for some, but for me it contains everything I need...

Senior Walking the Portuguese Coastal Route in the Rain: Advice Needed

I would also vouch for waterproof socks. I use very breathing shoes, so they are able to get dry by the next day and keep my feet happy on sunny days. Waterproof socks without normal socks inside were rubbing my feet a lot around the achilleas. So do expect to wear waterproof socks with light...

    Minimal but comforting packing list

I put together for myself a packing list for May last year. I got all clothes and gear under 5kg (under 11 pounds). Frances is quite easy to pack for. You can even fit life in a 20L bag: http://caminopilgrim.travel.blog/2023/04/12/gear-packing-list-camino/

    Tips for Cold Weather Walking

I have been trying and testing out my next Spring Camino gear in close to freezing temperatures outside. The aim has been to pack as light as possible, while having practically everything with me for multiple use. Its really important is not to skimp on the after hiking clothing. With a calorie...

    Boots?

June should be something like +30°C and barely any rain ever on the Frances. If you plan to walk 10-15km daily then I guess boots are just fine. If you want to do 22km+ which is the standard distance (I think), then you would need an option that breathes way more than boots do. Camino Frances...

    Which Jacket?

April is the single rainiest month of the year in Spain. You will either need a poncho that goes all the way to your feet or rain jacket + pants combo. Hood of the poncho might be a mess so think about what kind of hat you would wear underneath. I personally also recommend waterproof socks if...

    Feedback on packing list please

If you don't want sunscreen then expect to wear your wide brim hat and long sleeve shirt while hiking on a hot day. Sunscreen is needed to avoid not just regular sunburns, but actual burn damage. Worst thing I have seen was second degree burns on the hands of a korean girl who was walking with...

    Feedback on packing list please

There is a lot of stuff I could live without on a Summer Camino. I do not know what trail we are talking about here, but if is Camino Frances then you will find pharmacies pretty much every single day. Other pilgrims can easily share stuff too. Same for extra charger batteries and stuff. There...

    Camino Primitivo shoes in July

In the end it is indeed best to take with you what you are most comfortable with. Sudden gear changes will bring hidden surprises. I did not mention how much physiotherapy, mobility training and strenghtening of ankles and hamstrings I have done to be able to do Norte with trail runners meant...

    Camino Primitivo shoes in July

I suggest July trail runners that breathe as much as possible. If you are afraid of getting a rainy day, then pack a pair of waterproof socks with you. July is an extremely dry month and weather will be hot. From the shoes you showed, I would opt for the Adidas Terrex Skychaser.

My first Camino - clothing & footwear when done walking for the day

I'm the guy wearing hiking sandals with socks and my sleeping clothes in the evening. Adding just a pair of hiking shorts and maybe a fleece jacket on chillier evenings. You don't get style points for walking the Camino and locals anyways you know you are a tourist. Might as well look like one...

Best Ultra Lightweight Sleeping Bags for the Pilgrimage in March-April

Note: I did just purchase the Sea to Summit Thermolite Reactor Extreme for Via de la Plata for early Spring next year. It does fit in the waterproof cover pocket underneath my backpack. I will just put the waterproof cover to one of the belt pockets.

Best Ultra Lightweight Sleeping Bags for the Pilgrimage in March-April

I have been mixing layers of clothes for sleep during Camino, but I just now realized that I can add my fleece jacket as a bonus layer for legs. Thanks! This concept will save me a ton of backpack space. Just to clarify for others. I am hiking with a 300 gram silk/merino blanket as gear that is...

    My First Hiking Shoe question

I agree that on CF or VdlP you would want something with a little bit more "teeth" than road to trail shoes. I did CF with Brooks Cascadias. The rock plate protection was amazing on mountain days. Most of the time on CF its all about gravel and dust roads. There the grip was excellent.

    My First Hiking Shoe question

The Norte has also a lot of improved surfaces. Will be doing it in 2 weeks with road to trail version of trailrunners. So almost like sneakers. I love that they have cushioning for nerves, while having a flat base. I find a trail pattern under the shoe becoming quite stressful for the nerves...
