Talon 33 vs Tempest 34.... help me decide, please

Hey, my 2cents about Talon 33 (and 22). I used Talon 33 during my first CF in 2015 and extensively before and after. Padding is enough both on shoulder straps and on the hip belt (but to each his own). Hip belt pockets can accommodate quite a large smartphone, tissues or compact camera. The...

Footwear for Walking the Camino de Santiago French Route

In his guide, Gerald Kelly gives "72% for gravel strewn soil track and about 28% various kinds of paved surface". With 12% of total CF being paved long stretches around major urban areas. See http://www.caminoguide.net/

Lightweight and Compact Sleeping Bags for the Camino Frances

Hey, I have used Cumulus Magic 125 Zip on two Camino Frances (spanning from middle of September to the beginning of November). It was more than enough and I am taking it for VdlP beginning in last weekend of February. Now they offer newer version - Magic 100 Zip - even lighter. X-lite line is...

Have you any experience with any of the Camino apps?

I used app and guide (e-book) from www.caminoguide.net during 2015 CF (both paid ones, so cannot comment on free versions). As commented above - simple, easy and both very, very useful. Guide was updated recently and app was also improved since then, so they are my choice for this year's CF.

Smartphone vs. camera - how to carry the camera?

If it fits, the camera could go to the hip belt pocket (as in my case sony dsc hx5v compact camera fits into ospreys hip belt pockets). Then it would be always at hand and in rainy weather it can go into one of the waterproof jacket's pocket. Anyway thread stirred a little bit in my thoughts...

    Container for soap?

Hi. I'd used small mesh bag with a drawcord (sth small like the ones that travel towels come in) to carry a soap and usually left it out with towel and clothes to dry after washing, showering. When wet or moist (soap/bag) in the mornings, I simply attached the bag to the backpack to dry during...

    sleeping bags

I walked from the end of September through the whole October of 2015. Light - summer/indoor, ~10C - sleeping bag with zipper was very good choice. My thermal comfort varied depending on a day (temperature, precipitation, distance, consecutive long days, cold etc) so bag worked from only partly...

    Small, lightweight sleeping bag

Ehm, really - I can't. It is because You can find those in e-shops but I haven't seen them in any standard shop (perhaps price is the reason and also it is not a mainstream gear). And as far as I know (forums, my and friends' experience) most of the gear they offer is produced in small...

    Small, lightweight sleeping bag

We have a down filled equipment producer in Poland: Cumulus. They also make sleeping bags (see their x-lite 200 and magic 125). Last fall (Oct 2015) I used Cumulus Magic 125 Zip which worked perfectly - sometimes zipped and sometimes partly unzipped - without additional base layers.

camino gear thoughts - what worked

Hi, I used water bladder compartment for some equipment (chargers, first aid kit, threads and needles, some minor things). I considered bladder during preparation, but resigned due to weight, cost and refilling - two small bottles are light, cheap and expendable, easy to refill. Water bladder...

camino gear thoughts - what worked

Hi, Concerning socks: I developed some pain in my right shinbone during short orange juice break. No bump, impact, anything (insect bite?) It just started in Villacazar de Sirga end ended 200km later in Ponferrada. I found that my short socks had to be lowered to move pressure lower so I bought...

camino gear thoughts - what worked

I would like to share my thoughts about gear/equipment that I took with me on my Camino Frances from SJPdP to Santiago and then to Finisterre, Muxia and back to Santiago. I walked mostly in October (well, from Sept 26th to Oct 31st) so this is the timeframe it refers to. During these 36 days I...

    Wool vs synthetic for?

I use mix of merino wool and powerstretch shirts/t-shirts. Thin merino top (155) was used as a main shirt every day. Two thinner (sth like 110) were evening wear, additional base layer and/or scarf. All dry quickly and I hand or machine washed walking gear (with minor exceptions) every day...

    24L v 55L

I walked CF in late September and whole October 2015. Talon 33 did well (filled in 2/3 at most orless). Still since then I have switched to smaller Talon 22 and walked a lot with it already. So from my point of view 24l is definitely doable in that time of the year. As some others mentioned...

    Sole Survivor

According to Gerald Kelly's 'Camino de Santiato Practical Preparation and Background' book: "CF is about 72% gravel strewn soil track and about 28% various kinds of paved surface." "(...) stretches of paved surface around seven major urban areas (...) account for 12% of the total Camino."...

    Backpacks

Yes Talon is heavier than Arc Blast but have external pockets (however not for a tent). Kumo from GossamerGear looks also good.

    What rating sleeping bag?

In October this year I used Cumulus Magic 125 zip. Worked great both on colder days and warmer (just opened it) and weighs only 0,3kg. It is a summer/indoor 10dC/50F down sleeping bag.

    Which Osprey backpack?

This October I used talon 33 and it was like 2/3 full. Worked great. I became kind of a talon fan and have already received and walked a lot with talon 22 easily packed with all Camino gear, in preparation for next year Walk. And another talon, this time 11, works great for trail/forrest runs...
