Question of charging batteries in albergues

There always are power outlets available, but you never know how many candidates want to use them at the same time. Unless you happen to have a point exclusively to your bed (rarely:mad:) As far as security goes, one never knows how moments of inattention are being abused, apart from someone...

    SIM card

It doesn't really matter where you get your SIM-card, since the roaming in Europe has been unified. What does matter money-wise is the type of contract you intend to sign up for (heavy data downloads for example). I myself got a very good contract from Vodafone in England last year, which I used...

    Take a spare belt buckle.

Most haberdashery (pasamaneria) shops are likely to have the fitting buckle size.

Is passport needed ? (EU citizen)

You're right: travel with your valid EU passport and you should be OK to walk the Camino. Don't forget you credencial either.:)

Is passport needed ? (EU citizen)

As a EU citizen I travel (and have traveled) within the EU area with my ID and/or driving licence without a problem. Maybe that at my age (80+) the authorities and service providers tend to close an eye?;)

Is passport needed ? (EU citizen)

No, unless you have another official identification such as an identity card or a (valid) driving licence.

    Outlets for charging

I may be ignorant but wondered whether one could carry a solar charger on the backpack and load a back up battery whilst walking? Or any other energy-tapping gadget ?

    Outlets for charging

You'll find them in any hardware store (ferreteria) in Spain. 0.40 Eurocents.

Is a sleeping bag necessary on the Frances in the summer?

Silk liner, definitely. If freezing weather (!?!) is met, ask for a blanket (manta).;)

    Hip Belt Padding Short

Not all padding of backpacks reach 'round the waist. If your padding fits well over your hip bones, your pack should wear OK.;)

    WARNING. simcardspain.es

Maybe I'm not technically updated, but so far I've had an easy ride in Spain for many years as far as comunications are concerned. A SIMple card, to be had at Madrid (or any) airport (10 Euros) for my 'handy, which is museum ripe, covered local call necessities. If you need to "top up", you can...

    WARNING. simcardspain.es

Every year, and if my previous cell number results to be expired (more than 12 months no use), I buy a new card at Madrid airport (at Relay or Orange shops). Sending the new number to family and friends is only an e-mail away.;)

Calling all Techies ... re: Travel Adapter with USB ports?

Hold it: this ravpower, as far as I can see from the picture, still has a two pin plug which will not fit in Spain unless you buy an additional adapter in a local hardware store (40 cents, btw).:D

    Sleeping liner vs. sleeping bag

Which is what Annakappa and I had decided for. Most albergues have blankets available (manta) in case it is too cold for just a liner. Don't speculate on global warming though!

Calling all Techies ... re: Travel Adapter with USB ports?

I know, whilst on pilgrimage across Spain their isn't always enough sun, I still like to use a solar power supply. Actually, the gadgets produce under good light, not necessarily full sun. For $ 22 it saves struggling with other pilgrims for attachment in an albergue which has Murphy's law...

    Mindfulness on the camino

...sitting one evening in a pretty empty restaurant (pretty early for Spanish standards..) two elder couples walked in, sat on the table, ordered their meals and all four got busy on their iPad, tablet, or whatever other gadget I could not identify. They didn't talk to each other, just were...

Calling all Techies ... re: Travel Adapter with USB ports?

Depending upon from where you live and bought your iPhone, you should have a charger with some pins on one side and a USB on the other. This charger should be able to plug into an adapter which fits Spanish outlets. You can buy such adapter at most hardware stores in Spain, and a simple one...

What if my backpack gets run over by a bus...

Right! 90% of the Caminos are on narrow paths where buses are unlikely to pass.:) However.... watch out for bikers:eek:
