Using the Altus with off and on rain

That's the beauty of the Altus ... it's a raincoat cut to wear over a backpack. We did a very off-and-on rainy Portuguese coastal Camino a few years ago and the Altus we're fabulous. Easy to slip on and off when the sun came out & your pack is always covered. They kept us dry in some torrential...

    Footwear advice

Try Ahnu Sugarpine II ... lightweight, sturdy, great tread and wears well. I also have a pair of Anhu Montara, also great hiking shoes though a bit heavier and with a stiffer sole. https://www.ems.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-vestis-master-catal

    Poncho

I used an Altus on two quite rainy and windy Camino's and it was great. Because of the full zip front it's easy to slip off when the sun comes out. I leave it over the pack and tuck in the excess it so it's easy to get back on when necessary. Altus has sleeves so your arms stay dry and warm. ❤️

    Hiking umbrellas for sun protection

We bought these too, but not silver and not automatic. They are compact, very well constructed, good in rain and wind in addition to offering sun protection. They are a bit pricy but well worth it. It rains a lot in Galicia!

    Translator App for smart phones

A smart phone is an amazing and very light-weight tool ... translator, computer, telephone, GPS, camera, flashlight, reader, etc.). If your phone is not locked to a carrier you can buy a local sim card (15-25 Euro for a month of service with a reasonable amount of data) for whatever country you...

Traveling to Europe With Only a Backpack

We bought Sea to Summit ripstop nylon duffel bags that our Talon 33's just fit in (and are carry-on size). When not in use they double as laundry bags inside our packs (they only weigh a few ounces). I've also found it easier to stash the pack on buses and trains if it's in the duffle and it...

    Visibility in bad weather?

We completed the coastal Portuguese Caminho this October and endured some very heavy rain. Our Altus ponchos kept us and our packs dry and we used large size (but very lightweight) reflective vests over the ponchos. The vests fastened in the front with Velcro and performed admirably ... made us...

    Altus poncho versatility?

I used an altus on the caminho Portuguese last spring and it performed perfectly in all conditions ... Very versatile, and comfortable. It does help to wear a baseball cap under the hood to better support the brim. It should be awesome in monsoon rains.

    Used Equipment: Where to buy?

We have found high quality technical wear at local thrift shops, just last week we purchased an EMS vest and a windbreaker (both in like new condition) for a total of $5. at a Goodwill store. People either outgrow it, give up hiking, or just can't bother to return items that don't fit right. My...
