Waterproof pants that only weigh 1.3 ounces more than the gaiters is a no brainer. Take the waterproof pants. They can also pass as a pair of long pants when your others are still wet from laundry and you need long pants to go out for dinner because it is too cold to wear shorts. I have walked...
It will rain, it may snow at O'Cerebero, (it did in May 2014) it will be hot on the Meseta and it could be cold at any time. So come prepared for the four seasons.
SYates beat me to it. Their add tells you it is not a Camino pack. 'The Outbreaker Backpack is a maximum-sized carry on for city travellers.'
You will not be a city traveller, you will be a pilgrim looking to save every ounce in weight you can. Lots of good packs out there. Look at Deuter...
A head torch in your hand with your fingers over the lens will do the trick. Early mornings in spring you will be pleased you have a torch as you are finding your way out of villagers. We have felt like the Pied Piper with the amount of pilgrims following us on a dark morning.
I would take two 500ml bottles of water instead of the 750ml bottle. Easier to pack an if you misplace or loose your water bottle you still have a back up bottle.
I would also leave the hiking poles at home, if you don't normally use walking poles at home you do not need them on the CF
Packs are like boots, everybody has their own opinion.
I don't have an Osprey but it is the most common pack on the Camino so make sure you personalise yours otherwise you may have trouble finding it some days.
My trusty "Mont Sentinel 45" has seen two Caminos and over 1500 km and will be on...
Welcome to the 'No walking poles club' My other gripe is pilgrims who do not use rubber caps on their trekking poles. It drives the inhabitancies of the villagers around the bend. The constant tap tap of poles on footpaths outside their windows.
We use two 60o ml bottles in each side pocket of our packs, I know you can't do this as you have no side pockets. Never carry all your water in one container, if you loose or puncture it then you have no water.
An under loader larger backpack is very hard to carry, it has a tendency to slip all over your back. You are better off with the right size to suit your gear, much more comfortable. Also be aware of a travel pack, they are called a travel pack for a reason. They are meant for travelling with...
Really, 8 kg is not heavy, take what you are comfortable with in moderation and take no notice of the weight police. Some walkers do not add the weight of their, water, food or trekking poles on their totals.
Sixty six years old and two Camino's with out poles. In my opinion they are not needed unless you have knee problems. My wife has had knee replacement and she uses just one for balance going down rough tracks, she has also walked two Camino's. Think of the extra weight if you are not using them...
