Regarding shoes, I wear them until holes appear, as for a backpack I've been happy with the one I bought in 2014 which I've taken on three caminos, I can't imagine it wearing out.
Walking poles, for me, absolutely, especially going downhill, in the rain and going uphill. Basically, all the time LOL. As for bag or liner I think it will be very cool in the evenings by then and you'll appreciate having a bag.
My wife and I find that Viber works really well. We’ve used it on three different Camino’s and it works on PC’s, android and IOS devices so it’s pretty complete.
Like others have said, forget Brierley, it's your camino, not his, you'll be fine without it. There are a number of good apps that have everything it has and are kept up-to-date regularly. Plus, at St Jean you'll get a map with elevations when you sign in to the Pilgrim's Office.
I had the same problem on my first camino, horrible chaffing, found a pair of long bike short style underwear and the problem went away. Now any time I know I'm going to walk for more than an hour I have my longer underwear on. Won't be without them on camino every again.
Being judgmental is easy. Erasing it from my character is an ongoing challenge, sometimes I succeed, sometimes not. I think it is a goal worth reaching for though.
