Agreed with most points. For a "trip" the Le Puy was superior for the most amazing chambre d'hôtes, food and wine.
The Spanish food was no comparison, to us, both had great wine, but the camaraderie and the "pilgrimage" feeling in Spain was far superior.
On the Le Puy, we walked with French...
Check out the beaux villages......they are on the list for a reason. Conques was nice, Lectoure was good, Moissac, and aire sur ladour were some that we spent rest days in.....also partially because of where they were on the route and the timing for rest.
We stayed st Le Clos de Pierres Rouge on our first night. The walk is fine....although my knee was giving out on the downhill rocky stretch right before getting there.
When leaving the next day, get them to explain the shortcut to get back on track.
They have a really friendly huge dog!!
We...
The saying that we saw so many times here: "on the Camino Frances you walk with pilgrims, on the Le Puy you walk with the French" is absolutely accurate. It was a totally different vibe for us. If we did the Le Puy first, we may not have done the Frances. Maybe.
The Frances had far more...
We chose to prebook everything from le Puy to SJPdP last sept/oct and were happy. Others wing it. You can't go wrong either way so it depends on what you cherish more.....the freedom to stop wherever you want whenever you want, or the freedom to walk into a village, check in at the place you...
Auvillar was a nice little place....one of the 100 beaux villages, as I recall.
We stayed at a less interesting but excellent Chambre d'Hote. Once again, stretching my memory, I think it was the village with the cat sculptures all around in windows and buildings, along with the full size...
Was in Lectoure last night. Tons of British expats there and we were surprised all the time there as to how many people spoke English. It was also the first time we found subtle and not-so-subtle anti-pilgrim sentiment. We stopped at a bar/restaurant and there was one table left outside. The...
Just got back in from dinner in Auvillar. We were the only ones in a tiny restaurant which was, essentially, in the owner' home. I never doubt my ability to read people and I believe I read this lady as one that wasn't in the mood for another "pilgrim"....whatever that means. Or maybe wasn't in...
We are on the Le Puy Chemin right now and in Golinhac. As others have noted, on the camino frances you walk with pilgrims. On the Le Puy, you walk with the French. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but just a reality. There is no sense of a camino but, rather groups of 60+yr old French groups...
We have booked ahead for our trip starting in September and I would say 6 or 7 places that I tried were already full. Not a biggie, we found other places and I'm sure due to my total butchering of their language we will show up at some places to find no record of our reservation. There will...
Hi Elsabe, we're leaving Le Puy on Sept 6th as well so I'm sure we'll cross paths. We are staying in St. Privat and then Sauges as we enjoy not killing ourselves the first few days. The comments from others are very true as we found that some of the fittest people were the ones with the most...
We leave Le Puy on the 6th. We know how far we can walk so it makes it easy for us to know where we are going.....plus, one of us (not me, haha) loves the research and booking process necessary to stay exactly where we wish. Part of our enjoyment is staying in charming little places that enhance...
YMMV.....it is obviously not necessary to book ahead and I have no idea how many do or don't. We simply choose to as it makes our trip more enjoyable.
There is no reason to have a panic attack or stop reading the forum. If you are happy to book a day in advance, then that is precisely what you...
We have chosen to book ahead for our September/October camino from Le Puy to SJPdP......just received the last confirmation this morning, in fact!
Some places were full but generally no problems. We simply prefer to not have our lodging being an issue during our walk and we have no problem...
Thank you for the replies. I feel confident that either destination will allow me to ask the person owning the accomodations to hold the bag for us for the month. So, I was thinking either courier or postal system.
Kitsambler (and great blog btw), you used DHL? We won't have the time in Paris...
We will be bringing an extra bag with "normal" clothes etc for the additional 7-10 days of decompression time in France after we finish the Le Puy route in October 2014. We will arrive in Paris and either send from Paris to St Jean Pied de Port (our end point) or to Beaune where we will spend...
