Anna Bressanin in a BBC travel article published February 14, 2024 details an extraordinary Mappa Mundi now housed in the Library of Saint Mark, Venice.
2.4m x 2.4m in size the map completed in 1459 was the masterpiece of Fra Mauro, a monk who lived on the Venetian island of San Michele, now a cemetery
The map is composed of minute colored drawings plus a total of 3,000 cartigli – red and blue annotations of anecdotes and legends gleaned from the knowledge of travellers who passed through Venice in the 15th c.
For me to read about this intellectual artefact is splendid but to view the Mappa Mundi while revisiting Venice after 50 years would be subline.

Mappa Mundi: The greatest medieval map in the world
From a small island in the Venetian lagoon, a 15th-Century monk somehow designed an astonishingly accurate planisphere of the world.
