Hi, we are going to start walking the Camino Frances at the end of September. We're first time walkers. We don't have enough time to complete the trip but can walk as far as Sahagun. We're trying to figure out how to handle our last few days before needing to get to Barcelona to meet up with friends. Seems like we have 3 options:

1) walk from Calzadilla de la Cueza to Sahagun, spend the night, then get a train to Leon where we can spend the day and one night before leaving.
2) walk from Calzadilla to Sahagun and catch an afternoon/early evening train to Leon.
3) Skip Leon and catch a train from Sahagun to head to Barcelona (which means we could possibly take an extra day earlier on the Camino or really enjoy Sahagun or spend a night in Madrid (though we have been to Madrid before but not Leon)

Anyone know if the trains and/or buses are reliable and regular from Sahagun to Leon? Is Sahagun a nice town to spend time in or should we try to get extra time in Leon?

I realize a lot of this is subjective. Interested in people's opinions/advice....

Thanks!
Sharon

You can bypass Sahagun completely, because the train station is on the edge of town as you arrive. But why? It's a nice smallish town. Leon is worth spending a night in too; it's much less touristic than Barcelona. And most of the tourists are pilgrims, unlike Barcelona. The cathedral is a glorious temple of light, worth some time.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

I can't help with most of it but Albergue de la Santa Cruz in Sahagún was easily my favourite albergue on the Camino Frances. If you miss staying there then that is a significant loss.

I've got nothing against León or Barcelona, nice cities with lots to see, but we spent 3 days in Sahagün and I would have liked to have stayed for more to experience a Spanish town. It is small enough to know yet big enough to be interesting.

Hi yes just walked the Madrid which ends in Sahagun. The albergue in Sahagun biggish but lovely feel . We had a double room for 15 E which was worth it . Mass in small chapel . Beware the group stuff though as think that’s where we got Covid , wear mask
Sahagun fine but Leon is a pretty and interesting city . Trains go 2x a day to Leon , just watch out for Sundays or holidays
Leon has a lovely leisurely feel to it and not touristy or speedy . Watch yr money/ bags in Barcelona
Buen Camino . Whatever you choose will be fine

Yes. I pushed Sahagün believing that since you had spent time in Spain before and only walked halfway across it you would be back and spending time in León.

We've decided to spend the night in Sahagun to enjoy the town and not rush. Depending how we feel, we'll either take the train into Leon the next day or stay in Sahagun and relax. There are trains from Sahagun or Leon that will get us to Barcelona. We definitely hope we'll be back and finish the Camino from Leon.
