Hi e.s.bateman, here is my reality walking with children: 1. Other pilgrims will be vocal on their thoughts on how cruel you are to do this to a child. They will say it to your face or they will say it very loudly to their fellow pilgrims when they are sitting next to you. Others will think you are crazy but will encourage you and your child. 2. only you know your child and their capabilities. These nay-sayers don't know squat. Ignore them 3. The beautiful Spanish people 'tell' your child how amazing they are and shower them with treats - almost daily 4. you will meet other families along the way which is reassuring. 5. you will stop at almost every playground along the Camino. There are a lot!!! 6. My favourite, you will stop and smell the roses a lot, and its wonderful - but I am sure you know this. When we were a couple of days past Sarria, we stopped to watch a beautiful beetle try to cross a small stream of water. For 10 minutes we watched and cheered that beetle on and made sure he eventually got to the other side on the 5cm wild 'river'. Dont know how many pilgrims passed us in that 10 minutes but I still have a strong memory on how united we were. Our children were our teachers as much as we were theirs. Our boys dont like nuts or muesli bars either which is a pain! We had a supply of fruit, bread and lollies (not the best). They enjoyed their morning cola cao (hot choc) while we enjoyed our cafe con leche. Our boys were 9 and 11. When they have to clean their room they would often tell me that it was 'the worst day ever'. I remind them that no, walking to Roncesvalles was the worst day ever! They smile and agree. They will be 11 and 13 when we walk again this December. We were up front with our boys - yes, they are older than yours. We got their approval, we watched lots of you tube clips, we trained and told them that they had an out. They say the word and we would get a bus or taxi. We did that about three times (we had to be on a schedule as we had 35 days to walk). We didnt stay in alburges, favoured private accom - we didnt take sleeping bags but we will next time. Have a wonderful time with your child. S/he sounds like an adventurer.
