I’d like to buy a child size souvenir walking stick for my granddaughter. It won’t fit in my checked bag. Do you think I could carry it onto the plane when I depart Spain?

This is a reverse. I'm used to seeing people write about not being able to fit walking sticks into carry on and so being forced to check them (or buy when they arrive).

If it won't fit into your checked luggage, it may not fit into the prescribed dimensions for carry on. You may want to check with your airline in advance whether you may be able to gate check it (you bring it to the gate and hand it to the airline staff there and receive it from them when you disembark).

I’d suggest a visit to the nearest ‘China store’ where for a surprisingly small sum you could buy a bag big enough take your current bag, several walking sticks and a sack of vacuum-packed tigres for your other half, and checking the lot in. The bag will probably be bright pink, with mis-spelled logos and some cartoon characters which you will not recognise; but it should survive one international flight.

In answer to your specific question- I doubt it.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
If you try to bring ANY item on board that can conceivably be used as a striking / bludgeon weapon or a stabbing / poking weapon, it will likely be refused. Or, at least it ought to be, under international flight security rules.

Check ALL walking sticks- regardless of who they are for.

Yes, you will likely see many replies from others who will report anecdotally, how they got around the rules, or which person from what airline, on what route, on what day, chose to ignore the rules.

I always advise taking a conservative approach to airline security.

Hope this helps,

Tom
