If I were to detour and walk from melide to sabrado to visit the monestary and then walk back to melide to continue along the Frances, would that jeopardize qualifying for the compestetla?

No, while there are recognised routes they are somewhat flexible and there are no Camino police who will stop and question you on your way. If you get a stamp at the monastery then someone in the pilgrim office may remark on it, probably more out of interest than anything else and most likely they won't even mention it. If you don't get a stamp in the monastery then no one except you and your god will know.

You can also detour to this splendid Cistercian/Trappist monastery from Arzua. The round trip is roughly 50 km. March 2007 when the door porter saw my American passport he delightedly (and silently) pointed to several library shelves filled with the works of Thomas Merton, the renowned American Trappist. Alone in the afternoon I wandered through the many structures in awe.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
