Problems in France as most municipal gîtes are closed...

Unsurprising as not only is it now the tourist off-season, but tourists have been very thin on the ground this year for the obvious reason, so that many touristy businesses etc. having no local patronage to rely on have kept shut.

Some places only take one ‘party’ of people so best to group up and book together. At Limoges the Sisters only allocated the rooms on every other day. As a result I have resorted to booking.com for instance in Bergerac and Sainte Foy La Grande. Due to reach SJPDP in ten days. Any Spanish info most welcome...

Staying near St Palais. Have met no other walkers let alone pilgrims for about four days. Weather appalling today with about three hours of heavy rain and string westerly wind. Hiked about 36 kms from Orthez. St Jean tomorrow after a late start (Saturday breakfast at the Logis is 9 am). I have not had a rest day so this makes up for it.

Photo of medieval bridge at Orthez this morning.
