Insight into building techniques

A backstreet in Santo Domingo
I'm not sure if this is an example or not, but you often hear of abandoned fortresses or cathedrals, city walls and fortifications being scavenged by later generations for building supplies. It is always interesting to imagine those larger stones and finding ancient latin incriptions and wonder "from whence the came".
