is it necessary to book ahead if anyone is walking now wondering how crowded the albergue are we don't like to book ahead we have 35 days to walk to Santiago also is light sleeping bag ok or liner better this time of year feeling excited cheers

Considering the Norte is along the summer resort area, I think a liner would be enough. As to booking ... I understand that you like flexibility, but the reality is that on the Norte the villages/towns/cities are spread out enough that you really don't have much flexibility in many places, unless you don't mind an extra, unplanned, 10-15 km.
