Hi. I have to completely disagree with this. Your normal debit card is very likely to charge a fee for withdrawing cash (around £3 usually), and perhaps some conversion fees on top. I don't see how travel money cards could make the banks more money as they're usually free and don't charge overseas withdrawal fees.Hi Rowie. I used a travel money card once and found it a waste of time, more a gimmick to make money for the banks than a convenience for the customer. Your normal debit card will be fine for accessing cash as long as it is a Visa or Mastercard etc. Just remember to let you bank know you will be travelling overseas.
My friends recommend Revolut. I think it’s easy to top up from your phone and I think it’s currency commission freeCould anyone tell me what they would recommend as a Prepay travel card when travelling Porto to Santiago? I'm from the UK. Thanks
Don't they charge interest on funds withdrawn from ATMs?I use Halifax Clarity credit card and withdraw cash as needed from ATMs.
Very little. As I mentioned above, a 100 euro withdrawal would only cost 5 cents per day. If you pay it back the same day, it'll cost you 5 cents total for the withdrawal.Don't they charge interest on funds withdrawn from ATMs?

It’s technically not a prepaid card, but I use it like one. The Starling online bank is great for travelling abroad, you can load it directly from your banking app. You aren’t charged exchange fees when making purchases in Spain.Could anyone tell me what they would recommend as a Prepay travel card when travelling Porto to Santiago? Thanks for that. I had never thought of that idea. Very helpfulIt’s technically not a prepaid card, but I use it like one. The Starling online bank is great for travelling abroad, you can load it directly from your banking app. You aren’t charged exchange fees when making purchases in Spain.
Thanks Vince for your help. Buen Camino to you too!Hi Rowie
I am also from the UK and have been 4 times on the Camino. I only took an initial supply of Euros and used my bank card and credit card without any problems. hope this helps.
Buen Camino
Vince
That's not a bad idea thanksAs above Revolut and Monzo allow free withdrawals up to £ 200 each per month in EU so I suggest if you think you will need £400 cash for your trip you get one of each. You can top them up as you go along so no need to preload the total amount before leaving. That is my plan for my trip next month - then no costs for withdrawing from ATM's. Rest will be paid via Halifax Clarity credit card which has good exchange rate.
Thank you Simon..that's very helpfulI use Halifax Clarity credit card and withdraw cash as needed from ATMs. This is the best according to this:
Also in portugal ATM fees vary a lot. The cheap ones are liberbank, kuxtabank, ibercaja, espanaduero, unicaja, deutsche bank, bankinter.
My pleasure. The Starling ATM withdrawal limit is £300 a day, so that should be more than enough to keep you going. Have a great caminoThanks for that. I had never thought of that idea. Very helpful
