Warning Wayfinding out of Leon

September 2024 Invierno / VdLP or Cathar
Late August 2022 - In preparation for leaving in the early morning I decided to pre walk the route from the Cathedral to the CF Oviedo split in the Plaza San Marcos. In many many places from the church on the arrows have been painted over. Unless you know the route well or trust your app you will have a difficult time way finding in the dark. You can see in one of the photos only a bare fleck of yellow paint. This was at a roundabout where it’s hard to know one’s way.

I spoke to a volunteer about it, he said it’s because of Covid. Someone had objected to outside visitors.

I suggest you might want to pre walk the route if your navigation skills are poor.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Loved the walk out of Leon early in the morning. If you go in the dark it is all part of the excitement. Suggest to pre walk round the tapas and Morcilla bars, much more fun.

In 2017 we got lost on our way out of Leon and found ourselves in industrial area which looked so unpleasant and weird! It was our end of the day, we wanted to go out of that area as soon as possible. Finally in a couple of hours in dusk we found an albergue on the edge of Leon and checked in. The albergue was as grim as the area around. Surprise! Surprise! It was a former mental hospital.
The rest of the day was not better with some absurd events like hospitalera walking in a women bathroom without knocking with a male pilgrim to show him around, bars opened at 10pm with staff not willing to serve strangers.

A selection of Camino Jewellery
I stay at the St. Maria and using the Leon map in Brierly's guide, I just continue down c/ Rua to c/ Ancha, turn left and go down to the big roundabout, and then diagonally across to Gran via S. Marcos and follow that all the way down to the river and join the Camino at the bridge. I have no problem with industrial areas or anything else because to me they are all part of the Camino. I walk to whole way.

Is there a list of albergues that also have private rooms on the Camino Frances? Gracias.
Hi everyone -- After walking the Frances from SJpdP last October, I'm planning to revisit the bit between Logrono and Burgos this July, following different stages. It's the section where I had...

And another attempt looms, to buy a decent Poncho after trying and failing in the previous two likely towns. Anyone know where an Altos or similar might be bought in Leon, please? 😁
