Frances, autumn/winter; 2004, 2005-2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015
Ponferrada has never been my favorite stop so it was with GREAT pleasure that I stayed last November in a new private albergue, El Val, in Salas de los Barrios an historic village close to the Molinaseca/Ponferrada path. What a find!! This hacienda dates from the 15th century and Jorge the helpful multilingual owner/hospitelero will proudly show you the original deed!! Sympathetically renovated it contains both albergue dorms as well as private rooms. My albergue bed with fresh linens and copious breakfast was 15 euros. Their web is www.haciendaelval.com

Is it that close to the path that I can't miss it? The map on the website didn't show the surroundings or where it is relative to the camino. Looks really good!
It's actually approx.6kms (both by car or walking) SW from Molinaseca.

Call Jorge at the number on the Web site and he will pick you up and return you there next morning. A good place to meet on the CF is at Campo after Molinaseca but well before Ponferrada.

The last post was from 2014!
Oh my gosh, you are so right! How did it end up on my radar just now? So weird. Thanks for pointing it out, Falcon.

P.S. I just figured it out-- it popped up after reading "Ponferreda Watch Out." Geez, I need more coffee before I start reading the forum boards...

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Thanks SeattleJen , looks good and it has a pool,

You're welcome! Disclaimer: I didn't stay there and cannot vouch for the place. I actually stayed in the Alda Hotel in downtown Ponferrada.

I quickly deleted my original response out of embarrassment for re-activating a four-year old thread, but the gist of what I wrote was this: I'm so sorry the original poster doesn't like Ponferrada because I look back on my rest day there last month with the greatest fondness. The city fed my soul in ways that I didn't know I needed. I think we all experience the villages/towns/cities/remote places differently according to whatever our own psychological experiences are at the moment. I hit my worst mental rock-bottom in Astorga, yet everyone else I know raves about the city. I have no desire to ever visit it again because I personally was at such a low point that night. I firmly believe every day I experienced on the Camino was framed by where I was psychologically and spiritually.

I loved Ponferrada so much I signed up for a Flamenco dance class that starts in two weeks... perhaps with the hope of recapturing how I felt the day I encountered the Flamenco street party outside my hotel door when I was there. https://caminojen.com/2018/05/05/gracias-ponferrada/

Buen Camino!
