Apologies if this has already been asked elsewhere. I plan to begin walking the Norte in April - I have 12 days so aim to walk Irun to Santander if possible, a little shorter if needed.

Am I right in assuming weather related problems are likely to be wind and rain rather than snow now?

And albergues - am I likely to find many closed still due to the time of year ?

Many thanks for any help,

Duncan

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Duncan, the Norte albergues are often only open during high season: June & July.

The Eroski website lists all the albergues en route and includes the dates they are open/closed. I hope this helps.

Duncan:

I walked the Norte April 1-29, 2014. I did not have any rain until I reached Galacia and the weather was beautiful. That said, Mother Nature can be fickle and my experience does not guarantee a rain free Camino for you. Prepare for the worst and except what you get. I had no problem with accommodations and suggest you use Gronze.com or the Eroski sites for finding Albergues/hotels. Many use the Cicerone (sp.) Northern routes guide.

This is a great coastal walk. Irun to Santandar is doable in twelve days

Joe

Thanks Joe.
I saw after these questions have lready been asked and answred elsewhere on the forum. My plan is still to go mid April-ish and whatever weather comes. My only real concern was accomodation. Looking at the change in elevations I may not get as far as Santander but we'll see, will return in 2017 to do the next leg.
I have my Cicerone guide now and there was was a useful link posted to the related website a few days ago.

I went in May (April 29 - June 6) - and had no problem with accommodation. If a place is closed for the winter it has opened back up around March. If it is only open in the summer - July and August are all you get. I have heard it is more expensive than the Frances but I enjoyed the variety of accommodations. Municipal, Youth Hostels, private places like the Posata la Victoria outside of Santander in Cundon.
