Camino Frances ( 2016 )
I will be commencing the Frances on May, 4th. En-route to SJPP, I shall be stopping overnight in San Sebastian on May, 2nd. Can anyone recommend good value accommodation - preferably near the coach stop?

Cheers,

Richard

I have not been to San Sebastian so no personal knowledge.

Using google earth, I found Hotel Amara at the San Sebastian bus stop, Plaza Pio XII.

I stayed overnight in San Sebastian last May. I arrived by bus early evening and left by bus the following morning for my journey to Bayonne and SJPP. I checked out places to stay on booking.com but near the bus station all I found was expensive hotels. I ended up booking a bed for 23 euros about 25 minutes walk away.

Many thanks for the replies! I've now booked into a lovely looking hostel called 'A Room in the City' - just around the corner from the coach stop and £15 a night. Wifi and great reviews.

Thanks again! :)

Following Richard's advice, since I am also going to Camino Frances with a stopover in San Sebastian, I also booked a room in "A Room in the City".

¨A room in the city¨ out of season is very quiet, and I like it as it is tonight, but due to the central location in San Sebastian I imagine it is hard to get any sleep in the shared dorms in the summer. The pilgrims and tourists don´t mix very well... the private rooms should be fine though.
The common area is very nice, the rooms look rather spartan. Everyone gets a magnetic card to open and leave any time of day and night. A few steps to the Cathedral and to the new bus station. Free earplugs - must be a reason for it! :)

Arthur, I think you are spot on. I stayed at the Roger's House overflow hostel last June. It was recommended to me by someone who stayed there beginning of April. Modern and clean and in a central San Seb location - what could possibly go wrong? The manager left mid-evening and the whole place became overrun by drunken youngsters until dawn. I thought I was going to have to try and stop one thuggish bloke from forcing himself on a semi-comatose girl in her bunk. But fortunately she threw up and that deterred him. It's really hard to describe just how hellish it all was.
