Ultralight rain kilt for ultracheap tip

I've just received from China my new ultralight rain kilt. Thought I'd pass on the tip for anyone else interested in trying out a rain kilt / skirt instead of the more common trousers / poncho. The attraction of this one is that it costs about a quarter of the price of premium brands. At this price you could try one out and not care afterwards if it didn't work well for you.

The material and workmanship look fine. It's the same lightweight structured waterproof material that you would find on quality raincoats, not just some bin-liner plastic. It has a strong velcro band all round the top.

A tip for ordering from Alibaba is to choose tracked delivery. I had to sign for mine this end. It took 40 days to arrive from China.

I made my own with 2 yards of sil-nylon from Ripstop By The Roll, plus a strip of light webbing along the top that is long enough to tie around my waist.

I walked with a Cuben fibre rain kilt in 2014 and it was brill. Much easier to put on than trousers, it kept me dry enough, and doubled as a sit mat when needed. That's a great price! Mine cost $40, I think.

Ah good find. That might be preferable for U.S. pilgrims as they have the free delivery. For those of us in Europe it's probably cheaper to get it from China.

I managed to get my ULA (Ultra Light Adventures) rain kilt was free. I was at their industrial park office/warehouse/production (a real cottage manufacturer) in Logan, Utah going over the features of their Circuit backpack for an equipment test I was participating in, and I looked across the room at this hanging skirt looking thing. "What's that", I asked. "A rain kilt". "Huh???", I puzzled. I'd never even heard of such a thing. The ULA owner grabbed it and then wrapped it around his waist in quick fashion. He then took it off, and began rolling it into this ping pong ball-sized package that tucked itself into its own pocket.

I had to have one. I asked him how much it was, and he tossed it to me with a grin. I love the darned thing. And if I somehow need a quick and convenient covering for my nether region, it makes a great stand-in for a drying pair of running shorts or pants.

I’m on El Norte Day 29 ( just arrived in Caridad) and am using a super lightweight rain kilt/skirt. No more poncho for me, even in drenching day long rain (3 days total) the kilt held up only shoes soaked

I bought one yesterday. Sent a note after payment that I needed it for May 1 as I leave a couple days later for France and got a response that it would be shipped immediately, and before day's end, the notification came in that it is on its way.

I just wanted to recommend the seller I used as I can vouch for the fact it arrived safely. It was held up a few weeks in customs, but that's not their fault. You should note the long delivery times. Mine took the full 40 days they suggested.

Alibaba is like the Chinese Amazon. You should have no trouble ordering to the UK if you make an account with them. I did need to give my phone number for "verification" though, which I wasn't so happy about. But so far so good. From reading round the net I believe millions of people successfully order from Alibaba every day, so it's not a scam site.

It was a good pack, indeed. Have you had a chance to try either the Circuit or the Ohm? If so, how did it compare for you? The one thing I really like about ULA is the no-hassle ability to return something if, when you get it, it just isn't working right for you in either fit or function.

Yeah, I hear that. Isn't funny how what one prefers is so individual? Me, I like having a single, big top loading bag with lots of side pockets and a big pocket on the back, preferably mesh.

But I would love something really lightweight to cover the lower parts of my legs. All the gaiters I have looked at are too heavy in my opinion. Any of you found lightweight gaiters?

I was a little too self-conscious to walk in a rain skirt, but I did use a Rain Wrap from Enlightened Equipment. The white one from aliexpress must be pretty transparent. We were in Lavacolla ... everything was in the wash ... I was going to the bar with my fellow peregrinos in my underwear, wrap, and puff jacket ... Jim wasn't feelin the vibe and lent me a pair of shorts.

A rain kilt can go to the ankles if you want it to. Mine sits to mid-calf, or slightly lower. I always hike in shorts, and if my lower leg gets a bit wet, no biggie for me; they dry off fast. If it is abit too chilly, I wear a lightweight pair of base layer tights under my shorts. If they get damp or wet below the kilt, I stay still stay warm.

I use gaiters in snow. I know some wear them to keep their legs free of dirt and mud. But my skin is lightweight, quick to clean, and wipes dry with ease If my base layer gets muddy -- if I'm wearing it -- they rinse out fast, and, with a quick wring out, dry pretty darned fast.

Wrap, kilt, rain skirt... "you say potato and I say potahto" Enlightened Equipment make some great gear.

And if you can't find one long enough to your liking, there are some good and simple plans for sewing your own, which a lot of backpackers do. You can order the material, either silnylon or cuben fiber, and with some velcro and a length of belt-width elastic band material, you've got all you need to custom make what fits you to a 'T'.
