On September 28, 2011 I finish my first walk (short one Sarria-Santiago). It took me 5 days of walking and I spent another 5 days in Santiago going to different places in Galicia.
On October 3 when I was in the plane getting back to the states I realized I forgot the certificate in the airport's cafeteria.
Any suggestions about how to get a replacement other than take another walk? (I'll do it - longer next time)
I remember the date and time and place (desk #2) where I got it (can this help in any way?????)
Thank you
Jorge

To get a replacement Compostela all you need to do is send a photocopy of your credencial (or e mail a scanned copy) to:

Oficina de Peregrinos
Rúa do Vilar, 1, 1º.
15705 SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
A Coruña - España

If you wish address the envelop to me and I will sort this out for you. If you wish to send a scanned copy by e mail send it to johnniewalker-santiago@hotmail.com

In the Office we will find the original form which you filled in on the day you were there and a new Compostela will be issued.

Please make sure you enclose a copy of the address you wish the copy to be sent to.

Best wishes

For some people it is not important. But it is good to have it for the simple reason you earned it and they gave it to you. And it is my first one, probably in my second or third one it won't matter.

This is great news as I have cycled the Camino on many occasions, on three occasions bringing each of my sons. Unfortunately one Certificate was lost and it would be great to replace it.
If I scan in his credencial and email it would it be possible for you to forward his Certificate on to me?

Just curious, why is that paper so important? You know you did what you did. You know why you did it for. Who needs prove?

Yes the medal is an internal thing, you take that to heaven I guess..............

Well Done for 'doing' it, us next April

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

So sorry that you lost it. For anyone that takes a camera or camera-phone with them it is a good idea to take a photo of it - just in case.

Also, a couple of doors down from the office (turn left out of the door) there is a shop that will laminate it for just a few euros - sealed and safe forever!

As for why it is important ..? It is what humans do. Why do we take photographs of holidays when the memories are inside us? Why do we give gold stars to achieving primary school children? Medals to Olympic athletes? Soldiers? Certificates for degrees attained?

It is what we do - I say, treasure it.

John,

Thanks so much for your help. I received my new compostela today. Never thought I'd see it again, and I really can't tell you how much this has meant to me.

Thank you for taking care of this for me. I feel like I've been blessed by another angel on the camino.

Muchas Gracias,
Dominick

Hi John,
How long will it take to recieve the Compostela? My mum left her certificate in the hotel when we left Santiago to come back to England. Getting a replacement would be a perfect Mother's Day present for her.

My husband and I walked the Camino together. He had done the entire 500 miles in 2015. Now...I am 64 and he is 66 and it was our first wedding anniversary. I write this June 7, 2018 from a hotel in Santiago. Yesterday after pouring rains and about 20 miles from Santiago, I decided to better protect my stamped form by moving it to an inside jacket pocket. Lost it. Denied by the Pilgrim Office a compostela despite my husband presenting his, our pictures on the camera, etc. Now I am trying to keep from being angry at myself, and to understand what lessons I can learn from this. I was offered a Welcome Paper, but I respectfully told the Pilgrim Office " No Thankyou ", and left it. As a former policy maker and bureaucrat, not unlike the Cstholic Church to which I formerly belonged, it could be quite a lesson! Susan

I am sorry for the loss of your credencial. So close to completion, this must be very frustrating for you. And of course, many pilgrims feel that the credencial, with the stamps from along the Way, is their main way to renew their memories of the walk and the most important souvenir. I can only hope that you got what you hoped for in your experience of your camino. Blessings on your way as you return home.

Your memories and accomplishment are worth a lot more than a piece of paper.
