Armed & Dangerous at the Albergue

It was siesta time in the Melide alburque and I was just dozing off (on a top bunk) when the top bunk next to me collapsed with a tremendous crash to the floor. The wooden posts literally splintered! The poor guy on top of that one rolled onto the floor, miraculously unhurt. Luckily there was no...

The Way Is a River of Stars

And the journey continues ... it's true isn't it what they say, "The real Camino begins at home." I never intended writing a book about the pilgrimage. A few poems and some photos with an old fashioned camera were the only additions to my backpack along the Way. Deciding to write about it...

The Way Is a River of Stars

Merci JM. It's strange taking years to write a book and then it's public. Knowing that it is appreciated is a wonderful feeling. Kindred spirits, community, pilgrims for life, taking the time - these truly do make for a better world.

The Way Is a River of Stars

Hi Julie, I see you live in Sydney! I'm up in Byron. I hope the goosebumps have proved to be right as you read The Way is a River of Stars. My approach in writing the book is quite niche so I'm thrilled to hear that this delving into two faiths along the Way holds some appeal. Do let me know how...

Getting along in French on the Camino ?

Speaking Spanish certainly makes things easier in the marketplace but it's amazing how much can be communicated without words. Some of my fondest memories are of spending time with pilgrims whose English vocabulary was as scant as my Spanish. Buen Camino.

The Way Is a River of Stars 2013-08-18

In a memoir of saints, sages, and swollen ankles, Helen walks across the Catholic heartland of Northern Spain. Her chosen route is the Camino Frances, from Roncesvalles to Santiago de Compostela . Memories and miles intertwine, spanning not only the countryside but also her Christian upbringing...

    The Camino through Buddhist Eyes

Hullo past and future pilgrims, I walked the Camino Frances in 2004, arriving in Santiago de Compostela in September, one short month before this forum was born! How I wish there had been such a resource then. A huge thank you to Ivar for growing this site. Visiting it is the next best thing to...

    Frances alone or with boyfriend...

Alone alone yes. Wow your question has stimulated a LOT of response. I desperately wanted/needed to walk the Camino and my partner didn't. I wanted him to come but I also wanted to walk alone - if that makes any sense. In the end he stayed at home. I have never felt so much gratitude for the...

    Questions about walking alone

Hullo, These days on the Camino there will always be a pilgrim not far behind you and the ones ahead. When I walked (alone) the pilgrim community was like a perfectly spaced beaded necklace all the way to Santiago. Still it is good to be aware life can be unpredictable - a friend who walked...

Please tolerate me revisiting the topic on Camino Guides...

It felt sacrilegious tearing up my guidebook but I did it anyway and have no regrets. Divide it into three or four sections and poste restante them ahead to key stops eg. Burgos, Leon. (you can add a few little luxuries to the package also which can come in handy). I carried a double sided...
