Just so people are aware, the latest edition of the brierley guide (jan 2014) is advertised on amazon as being reduced weight. Quite what it's been reduced to, and how, I'm not sure. Still, I do think it's worth the weight!
I do agree with you in many areas, that being open to whatever may come is possibly the ideal way to experience the camino. But I don't think having a book filled with useful (and sometimes interesting!) information should stop it being an adventure or voyage of discovery. During my first camino...
I'd recommend lanacane anti-friction cream as opposed to Vaseline, precisely because it leaves no residue while your feet do become noticeably smoother to the touch. I moved onto vaseline as I'd run out of lanacane and couldn't find any more in Spain. If you're going to use vaseline, then only...

I used the Brierley guide for my Camino Frances last year, but unfortunately there does...

Hi to all you eager caminoists!!
I walked my first Camino, from SJPDP to Santiago in July/August 2013, and plan to return to Northern Spain twice next year, 2015.
The first time will be to take a group of 12 sixth formers from Astorga to Santiago over 11 days in late June/early July. I work at...
Having completed the Camino Frances last July/August, I'm hoping to tackle the Camino del Norte at the same time of year 2015. Working in a UK school, this is the only time of year I can make the entire route in one go, so have no option to go at another time of year. I'm hoping the albergues...
That was also a difficult morning for me, but mainly because I had a mini migraine the evening before and, predictably, felt both exhausted and completely removed from the people I was walking with. Battling internally with a throbbing headache and desperately trying to push my body through the...
