Sick on Camino...on train to Leon

I must have been reading your mind. After arriving in Leon I went to the hospital you recommend. I had tests and got needed prescriptions. I also booked rooms in the motel you recommended. My room has a view of the hospital and the cathedral. Great minds think alike. My US insurance will pick...

Sick on Camino...on train to Leon

I'm currently on a train heading for Leon. I've been very fatigued for a couple days. Tested negative for covid still would like some medical care. I'm an American so what is the best way for me to see a doctor in Leon. I booked a hotel for the next two nights.

LIVE from the Camino Solo Primitivo for retirement

Absolutely beautiful day Friday in Oviedo, but I needed one more day to get over the flight from the US. Masking up the whole flight, crying infants, and turbulence made for a rough flight. No one in Spain even checked my vaccine records or the qcr codes, but I provided the information prior to...

LIVE from the Camino Solo Primitivo for retirement

I am getting ready to leave for the airport in a couple of hours heading for Oviedo. I thought I would start this thread before I left to make sure everything was working. This this will be my third Camino. The first was the Frances in 2016 with my wife from Leon, and the second was the...

    How to get weight down

I never understood walking with a headlamp. I am on the Camino to “see” Spain not to race through the dark. Squeeze light on a wrist strap works for me in the albergue.

    Left or right…?

I used this method one early morning before first light. I saw these two German ladies with headlamps briskly walking away. I settled in about 100 meters behind them. After about a half an hour they stopped and I caught up with them. I was greeted by them "Buen Camino! Do you know where we...

    Left or right…?

I and my two sons always go the opposite direction my wife walks. I am not being sexist…she has no sense of direction. I try to say east and west and she only wants left and right. I can’t tell you how many times we have had the discussion that east is always east and left depends on the way you...

    Wise Pilgrim guide

Second the wise pilgrim app…I love it. As a forester I still like paper maps, but find the village to village maps better. So for me one app and one book. I try not to pick up the phone unless there is real need. The Camino is time to get off grid. I will be on the Primitivo on April 29.

COVID Walking the Camino when immuno-compromised or suppressed, so extremely vulnerable to C19

Walking with a partner who knows your situation could mitigate the cost. Many times my wife and and I found that the cost of a private room with almost the same as the cost to bunk. Yes you can have a bunk for 10 or a private room for 22. What would you do?

    What time is breakfast?

Breakfast -- the best thing about the Camino Portuguese. We found the bakeries opened at 6a and had wonderful coffee. Check out this article I read in 2018 on the plane to Portugal. We found a lot of 'savory' pastries with meat stuffing as well. Pastries to eat before you die...

    Tap Water or Bottled Water?

On a water related note -- I have a habit if drinking a liter of water within 30 minutes of waking up in the morning. I don't drink a lot at night -- 'old guy issues' :) I find if you start the day hydrated, you can carry a lot less water in your pack.

    Tap Water or Bottled Water?

I didn’t stress over water, but found myself drinking a lot of bottled water. When stopping with my wife to use restrooms in bars and cafes I would always buy something ’agua grande por favor’. I also use a hydration tube that fits in bottles, I use two bottles and like knowing when the first...

Walking the Camino Primitivo: Tips for a Safe Solo Journey in 2022

To comment on one item…the power bank. I understand your fear. But there are choices here. I had a 16 oz power brick I carry in my work bag that can give two full charges. There also small power banks about the size of lipstick that give 30% power charge. The small one is enough for an emergency...
