    Valcarlos route

And don't feel you'll be missing out by taking the Valcarlos route. While the views are not necessarily as dramatic, the scenery is still wonderful. Valcarlos is a pretty little town with all the facilities you'll need. There is the albergue, as others have said, although I stayed in a lovely...

    Bed bug alert!

    Don't the clothes shrink, though???

    Alternative to Orisson

I haven't walked the Napoleon route. I went via Valcarlos, which is a nice little town in a beautiful setting. I had one of the best, most convivial dinners there at the (very good) restaurant. There were about 20 of us from everywhere sitting outside and enjoying the flow of conversation (and...

Is a guide book really necessary????

Hi annakappa, I have downloaded the Eroski app. Have you used the app or have you only used the web version? The app seems to be out of date, for instance the VDLP section begins with a warning that the albergue in Castilblanco de los Arroyos will be closed from November 2014 to February 2015. I...

    Thanks Kanga, that's very helpful.

Pruden, I believe those two are the same saint. :-)

    Parador Discounts for Pilgrims

Yes, HeidiL looking pitiful and bedraggled does help. It certainly worked for me at the parador in Santo Domingo de la Calzada, and in Burgos I arrived absolutely exhausted and looking it at the NH hotel (calle de la Merced?) After the staff mumbled discretely to each other they decided to put...

Did Anyone Find Amazing Places to Stay off the Guidebook Paths?

I stayed in the pension which is just after el puente de la rabia, on the left. It was very good (the owner was a bit cranky though :) )

Establishing a CGG (Camino Gourmet Guide)

I absolutely agree. What a wise old owl you are, Houlet

The best way to prepare to walk the Camino ...

Tks Laurie, yes part of the problem was the cheap backpack I bought right before leaving for the camino. Next time I'm getting a better brand which will be fitted properly! (still doing the pilates :-)

The best way to prepare to walk the Camino ...

I agree, I didn't train my core and upper body enough for the CF this year and had a lot of back pain. Ended up having to send my pack ahead most days. For the VDLP next year I will be training with yoga and pilates. Richo.

    Camino October 2014

I was there at the same time, Lockslay. So wonderful to see these images and to remember the amazing experience of the Camino Frances. Thank you for posting them :-)

    Samos and onto ????

I stayed at the Victoria hotel last month - no hot water and the shower leaked into the bedroom, extensively. Nobody in reception seemed surprised. And yes, the food is mediocre at best, also expensive :)

What do people use in terms of spray for bedbugs?

Kanga, before I left for the CF in September this year, I read your posts about spraying the mattresses with a light permethrin spray to detect bedbugs. I was wishing I had taken your advice, when I woke up to a tickling sensation on my neck at 2 a.m. in a single room in an albergue near Sarria...

    Shopping in Leon

Hi all, First rainy day yesterday - absolutely foul weather coming out of Carrion de Los Condes. Good opportunity to test my expensive eVent poncho with the big pit zips. Fail! Kept the water out but trapped so much perspiration I was wet anyway. Would a jacket be better and where in Leon would...

    Tired pilgrim needs advice.

Hi wander woman - I'm happy to report that I'm in Santo Domingo de la Calzada now and things are indeed much better. When I was in Pamplona I was exhausted and doubted I'd be able to go on much further however, as the good people on here said, you get fitter, and I have. I still am tired when I...

    Tired pilgrim needs advice.

Hi all, Thanks so much for your advice and encouragement, it really helps. Things are very much settling down now and you DO get fitter. I stayed in the albergue del Perdon in Uterga and today to Cirauqui via Eunate to see the amazing church of Sta Maria de Eunate. As for the backpack - I...

    Tired pilgrim needs advice.

Lise T this mirrors my experience to a T, that's why I've also decided to take it a bit slower and aim for 15 Kms a say for a week or so and build up.
