So a few days ago I had the good fortune to stay at Alberque La Ferreria. It is located in Amandi which is about 2kms. past Villaviciosa.

Where else can you find a gumball machine that dispenses earplugs instead of gumballs? Needless to say the hospitalero Sergio has an interesting sense of humor as well as being an all around kind person.

Right before dinner I saw his wife in the garden picking the lettuce which was to become part of our dinner salad. The eggs at breakfast were from his chickens (yes, we had a real breakfast - not just toast and juice ). The point being that if you stay there you will be well cared for.

Other alberques that I feel are worth mentioning include the one in the country just beyond Deba (can't remember the name - it's been a long day); El Pino in Cobreces and tonight's - Casa Carmina in Muros de Nalon.

Since I don't always stay in alberques there are likely a few that I have missed.

Buen Camino.

Thanks @intrepidtraveler - I'm returning to the Norte in September, so this is very helpful information.

Buen Camino.

I think this is probably Albergue Izarbide. I agree 100% with your recommendation - it's a really good albergue and very well-run. Plenty of beds, male and female dorms, kitchen, laundry facilities, a bar and an excellent communal dinner. It's worth the extra few kms walk from Deba.

When I was in Villaviciosa in 2011 we couldn't find a hostel, just the monastary a number of km away - so I stayed in my first hotel on my Camino. How things have changed in 6 years!

Buen Camino!
