Anyone starting on 29th August?

I am arriving in St Jean on 29th August and will start walking the next day. I will be travelling alone and I am starting to get anxious now, as I have never done anything like this before! I have two questions, should I wear my walking boots or shoes (my feet get really hot when I walk!) and is it best to check-in my rucksack and poles into the flight hold, as I presume I cannot take my poles into the flight cabin?

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
I wear New Balance trainers and unless a person has really weak ankles, I don't see a need for boots. However, this is a big discussion and boils down to personal preference. My feet LOVE my trainers!

Regarding lonely, don't worry... you'll make friends the first day and see plenty of pilgrims this time of year! You'll be passing each other on the trail.

Buen Camino!

Wear your boots to guarantee that you don't leave them behind! It sounds silly, but there was always someone on Boy Scout treks that wore Nikes on the plane, and their boots were not really in their pack. I suppose that adults don't need to be quite so careful...

I put my Crocs in my carry on bag, and switch to them when I am on the plane. There is a reason that the passengers not in steerage get free slippers. They are darn comfortable!

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

€149,-
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
I'm going to start in Pamplona on Sept.6 and hike to Burgos ; then back to Madrid to meet my wife ;then start with her in Sarria on Sept. 21.
Falcon: any advice on train or bus from Burgos to Madrid?

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
The bus goes almost every hour to Madrid/Barajas:

There are about six trains a day, but they leave from the new station which is a fair distance from the center of the city. The bus station is just across the river from the cathedral.

good luck Sue, buen Camino! Hope it won't be too hot for you on the way. Put your poles in the hold with the rucksack to be safe. As for shoes or boots, I have the same question, but nine months in which to sort it out (May 10th departure from SW France where I live). Perhaps you can let me know what I should do?.... Karin

Thanks for all your replies, they were very helpful and reassuring. It would be great to meet up with someone to travel with from St Jean, Sue.

You will have a hundred to choose from right from the train and Pilgrim Office! Just start greeting everyone with a backpack until you find someone who speaks English and wants to prolong the conversation. You will be amazed how friendly your fellow pilgrims are. Take any "rejection" lightly. A lot of people have the same case of nerves that you may have, and may need a little time to warm up. By Orisson and Roncesvalles, everyone will be exhausted and friendly.
