Arthritis

Time of past OR future Camino
CF 2012, others, hospitalero, resumed VdlP 2022
I am beginning to suffer from arthritis which affects my big toes and my ankles. Sometimes the pain can be excruciating, and I find the best thing is to walk this off when, after about 5miles/8kms and I have warmed up, the pain is tolerable.

Is there another cure?

I have tried external applications of e.g. Voltarol with no effect. I do not want to start taking any drugs, but am prepared to change my diet.

Can anyone suggest a cure?

I am prepared to offer my right leg as a control and my left leg for experimentation.

Ideas please.

Peter

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
There are medical options that work fairly well, mostly in the form of pills, which would be really hard to administer to one leg...

I have arthrOSIS, and very happy about my Arthrotec pills.

What does your physician think?

Peter, I have severe arthritis in big toe (hallux rigidus). One thing that really helps is wearing a gel toe separator (you can google if don't know what it is, available on line also) between your big toe and next toe.
Second, lace your shoe starting halfway up your foot leaving lower part unlaced. Learn to do a heel lock with your laces (many you-tube videos on how) so your shoes will be stable even if not laced on the bottom. Another thing that helped me was wearing trail runners as opposed to shoes or boots. What worked for me was Saucony Peregrine -- you would need to try. I can't help with the ankle ... I have severe arthritis in one hip also. I don't think there is an easy answer to arthritis. Oh yes, there is surgery for the toe thing, but I haven't done it so can't say. Maybe I will after Camino this year -- maybe not.

We can give some general tips but I really think you will get better and safer information at your GP and/or specialist.
What works for one person does not automatically works for another one.

There is no cure for arthritis really just ways of dealing with it. And yes changing your diet can help but again IMHO when you visit GP/nutricionist.

Good luck.

I never thought I’d use this but I tried it and now I can’t do without it: CBD cream. voltarin never worked for me either. And unfortunately there is no cure for arthritis. Good luck.

Well! That's over 4 years since I posted here, and since then I've had arthroscopy and chondroplasty on my left knee and been diagnosed with ideopathic peripheral neuropathy in both feet and Depuytren's contraction in my left hand, but it hasn't stopped me walking and in March last year lockdown caught me on the VdlP and I'm going back next Spring to finish what I was doing before I was so rudely interrupted! All in time for my 78th birthday. But I'll try CDB cream - thanks for the tip.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Good for you, @peterhore, that's the spirit!
