Back Again - Caminho Português, September 2023

Time of past OR future Camino
Camino Frances (2016)
Caminho Português (2023?)
I caught the Camino bug again (not that I was ever really cured in the first place!). I'm planning to walk the Caminho Português from Lisboa to Santiago (and, hopefully, Finisterre this time) in September/October of 2023.

It will be exactly seven years after completing the Camino Frances from SJPdP in October of 2016. I'm excited to be back in the planning stage and back on the forum!

Jason, after hiking Camino Frances four times with my wife, I will hike Camino Portuguese alone in 2023. My wife developed a stress fracture so does not want to risk injury. If my CP goes well, then she and I can hike together the next time. I'm going to hike the coastal route Porto to Caminha, then head inland and hike the Central route from Tui to Santiago. This will be a new route for me and I'm enjoying the research of stage planning and checking out places to stay. Later this year I'll make reservations for private rooms each night. Bob

I walked the CP in 2017 and did the central route all the way starting in Lisbon. I walked the same time frame that you are looking at. Next time I do it I will walk to Fatima, walk the coastal from Porto and do the Espiritual Variente. I would also recommend checking out walking to Muxia. It is a much different experience than Finistere. It is much mellower. It is the last day that the camino splits and you choose Muxia and Finistere. Check out the comments here. The biggest difference is that Muxia is much mellower and more laid back than Finistere. It is just a matter of taste. Even better if you can walk to both.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

My husband and I walked this route, including Finisterre and Muxia, in September/October 2021. It was fantastic, we loved Portugal and the Portugues Camino! Enjoy!

We just walked the coastal route from Porto this spring. Although we went all the way to Vigo before cutting in, great reasons to also go in at Caminha. Bob, if you do have the time, consider adding the Variante Espiritual to this Camino. Well worth it! As you plan your accommodations, let me share with you where we stayed in private rooms.

Porto - The Passenger Hostel
Povoa Varzim - Junqueriea 76
Esposende - Esponende Guesthouse
Viana do Castelo - Hotel Jardim
Caminha - Albergue Bom Caminho
Redondela - Casa da Herba
Pontevedra - Hotel Boa Vila
Armenteira - Monastery Armenteira
Vilanova de Arousa - Albergue A Salazon

All were quite nice and places where I’d stay again.

Bom Caminho
