Booking flight Camino-Barcelona?

Hi,
I'll be on Camino Frances starting from Logrono, planning 3-4 weeks in July. Since it's my first time, I'm not sure about exact timing and unexpected events along the road. My flight in and out from Spain is through Barcelona. Looks like flying from Santiago in the middle of the week is the best bet. Any advice about booking in advance?

Ryanair have two flights a day from Santiago to Barcelona during the summer, prices right now are pretty good (€44 without bags) but will go up closer to flight date.

Spanair has a direct flight between Barcelona and Santiago....I see online that some dates in July 2011 are priced at 7 euro, each way of course.

I flew Barcelona to/from Santiago with them last fall for 25 euro each way and thought I had a great deal...but 7 euro simply screams out to be booked!

You can book online and get an eticket....I'm in Canada and the purchase online with credit card went smoothly and the ticket was emailed to me...I also checked in online the night before my flight and had my hotel/hostel print off my boarding pass for me...a great time saver...

I also use Barcelona as my connecting city into Spain.... if you want a nice clean and inexpensive place to stay in Barcelona, with a great location....I would recommend Somnio Hostel...I've stayed there several times and usually book the private single room but they do have dorm rooms as well... pm me if you want more info

Good luck,
Marilyn

We use Barcelona as our base for our caminos as it's both a hub for international flights and a great place to visit.

I would probably avoid booking a flight back from Santiago as it ties you to a fixed finishing date, what happens if you finish early or late? Given you probably have connecting flights to link to I guess you have to ensure you get to Santiago by a given date so it's not too much of a problem.

We usually take the train (the overnight train is very slow and has weird connections but you can sleep through it), or go through Madrid - sounds weird but Madrid is the train hub of Spain and everything seams to go through there. Also saves us being caught out by wild cat airline strikes (which were in full swing during our last trip) or rain as Santiago airport can often be closed in winter.

I went to Barcelona after Santiago and flew via Vueling, which was a very pleasant experience. I think I paid 70 Euro, one way, booked three days before the flight.

As for Barcelona, I stayed at Pension Palacio, http://www.pensionpalacio.com/indexing.htm
They were reasonably priced, friendly, and I had a private room with shared bath. They are within walking distance of Barrio Gotic, Las Ramblas, and the waterfront area.

Good luck!
