Time of past OR future Camino
2014 did Frances and plan to Le Puy in 2023
Can someone tell me the best way to book a train to Le Puy for Via Podiensis? Should I use Rail Europe, SCNF, TGA and what’s the policies regarding cancellation or schedule changes? Also, I guess it’s best to get a hotel in Le Puy at least first night since trains arrive so late probably past curfew times for gites.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
I would think you need to contact the companies themselves for information re cancellation policies/schedule changes.

Well, did you already have a look for yourself?

I don't know when you wish to travel but when I, albeit rather quickly, asked for train tickets for Barcelona/Barcelone to Le Puy on Velay on SNCF and Renfe for 30 March, they came up with rien nada nothing while Bahn and Rail Europe showed schedules and prices.

Conditions about cancellation etc are provided during the purchasing process; you just need to click on the links and read the text; sometimes it is mentioned on the ticket itself.

Schedule changes - you need to try to be up to date, ideally via the train operator's app or website; perhaps you get an email with information or a warning about major changes in connection with your purchase when you provided your email address but I would not rely on that.

Are you determined to travel by train? When I walked the Chemin LePuy I originally wanted to travel by train from BCN but found it to be logistically quicker and easier to fly from BCN to Lyon, then take the train from Lyon to LePuy.

Reaching le Puy from Lyon with SNCF is not very difficult (commuting in St Etienne if I remember).

Try the SNCF Connect app to find a train and purchase a ticket ... OR Rail Europe. You will first need to travel frim Barcelona to Lyon. Not all trains arrive «so late ...» it depends on which trains you book! but nevertheless at least one night in Le Puy is recommended ... lots to see there.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Florida Bill, here is a simple screenshot from «SNCF Connect» app showing details of the journey from Barcelona to Lyon ... train leaves Barcelona at 10h33 and travels via Montpellier, arriving at Lyon Part-Dieu at 15h50 ... once you have found a journey that suits you, you can purchase your ticket through the app ... voilà!
