Buying Trekking Poles in SJPdP?

I’m not checking my bag (as I have 3 different flights all self transfer and it will be too much of a hassle) so I can’t bring trekking poles with me.

I want to buy some in SJPdP.

Can anyone shed some light on where they bought theirs, what brands are available, and the price range? Cost is a big factor to me, but I don’t want one that’s will break on the trip.

I don’t necessarily need to buy them in SJPdP.. I’m open to waiting until I get to Pamplona if there are better (really I mean cheaper) options in a bigger city.

You may want them from SJPdP as there is a lot of up and down terrain until you get to Pamplona.

I bought mine in SJPdP for less than 20 euros. There are at least two pilgrim outfitter places there. I also got a great poncho that I couldn't buy in Canada. You'll definitely want those poles for the first few days. It's 1-2 days over the Pyrenees and then several days of descent into Pamplona. Also: if you're staying in a gite in St Jean, often pilgrims who finish their camino there (after walking for weeks through France) leave their sticks behind. A friend of mine was able to acquire a great set of sticks from the "free bin" at her hostel.

I bought min in SJPDP at the store others have linked to in this thread—also got a little Swiss Army knife and some Crocs. The poles I got had cork handles and cost around $40-$60 I believe (if memory serves). I intended to use them just for the Pyrenees but ended up keeping them all the way to Santiago, since I was carrying my pack. Great for balance, rhythm, preventing swollen fingers, etc.

I bought mine in SJPdP when I went last year. I didn't want to buy them at home and run the risk of having them confiscated by TSA or other security personnel (I took my pack on the plane with me, rather than checking it). It proved to be the right decision. I think I spent about 24 euros in the store mentioned above, which is almost literally right across the street from the Pilgrim's Office, where you'll get your first stamp. The poles I got were the telescoping variety, and they worked perfectly well over the entire course of my walk to Santiago.

There is a place just down the hill from the Pilgrims Office, "Boutique de Perlin", where I got a pair of poles for about 20 euros in 2019. They served me for two Caminos, excellent value.

I bought mine for 40 euros here...https://www.boutique-du-pelerin.com-right in SJPP. The shop had a decent selection at varying prices. I'm not very familiar with brands, so I picked out the Hobo Elementarre. They seemed a sturdy pair. They did their job well and I'm glad I bought them. I saw people hiking with heavy loads from SJPP to Roncesvalles without poles...would not recommend that unless your traveling super light. I hope this helps and buen camino.
