Hi Pete, I am planning on May 2016 also. Becoming more brave as I talk to pilgrims, follow the Forum, and read, read read. First thought, was I could walk Leon to Santiago, now thinking I can walk SJPP to Santiago. I am 62, and it's definitely time.

I walked from Le Puy en Velay to Cahors in May, 2013, I experienced extremely wet weather!! However, most locals said it was very unusual to see such heavy rainfall and cold / windy weather (especially in the Aubrac region)- in May! Hopefully, you will not experience this , however, be sure to have adequate rain gear, mid-height gtx boots and rain pants, just in case! Other than that, it was a fantastic experience!

I have been improving on my daily walks. Yesterday I walked 6 miles and it felt good but today I'm quite tired. Humble experience. I should be able to walk 12 miles by the end of next week. I'm beginning to understand the meaning of foot attention. What is the average distance between hostels on the route?

This section of the Camino (St. Jacques Dr Compostelle in French) goes from Le Puy-en-Velay all the way to St. Jean-Pied-de-Port, about 750 kilometers. This particular way is also known as The Way of Le Puy, it basically precedes the Camino Frances and it is all in France. Look up Chemin du Puy or The Way of Le Puy online for details. Also in Latin: Camino Podiensis. Also known as the GR65 in France. I didn't meet any gringos at all on that stretch, I think not many Americans are familiar with it. Beautiful verdant scenery all the way. You'll walk through places like Figeac, Aurillac, Conquest, Cahors (tge birthplace of Malbec wine) Estaing, etc. I only did 350 kilometers, stopped in Cahors. There is a French guidebook called "Miam Miam Dodo "dedicated to this Camino , but it is not available in English.

Your suggestion to look at "The way of Le Puy" was great! thanks. Do you per chance know how far the first hostel is from Le Puy on the route? I think that walking 350 kilometers is still pretty fine :0)

Before St. Privat d'Allier is St. Christophe sur Dolaison and Monbonnet at 9 and 17km respectively. Bon chemin.
