Hi, Shortly before Christmas I thought that it would be nice to mark reaching '3 score years and 10' in 2015 by walking one of the routes to Santiago. I then discovered this wonderful forum. Much information gleaned already from existing postings, but no doubt as a 'newcomer' I'll be seeking further advice in due course so thanks in anticipation.
Buen Camino a todos/as

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Hi Meldelcamino, welcome to the forum. Are you planning to walk from Porto or Lisbon? I shall set off from Lisbon in April this year, but at a mere 'three score'.

Hello magwood, Thanks for the welcome. Im planning to walk from Oporto via the Coastal Route as the time/distance involved is about right and the 'minimal elevation gain' is appealing. Between now and May 2015 I'll give consideration to the interior route as well as reconsidering the route from Pueblo Sanabria and Ourense. Before that I'll need to work up my stamina to accommodate 25km per day!

Hi Meldelcamino! Portugal is lovely. My husband visited first by car Lisbon, Fatima, coimbra, braga and then took bus from Porto to Valenća beginning a short week long camino. It was wonderful. My hubby who was 62 at the time was much better at walking than I at 48! But then again my short legs and chunky frame was more stressed by it all :)! We both loved the experience. Buen camino!

Hi Mariposa627, Thanks for your information. Although I haven't visited the Minho region of Portugal, my wife and I visited the Rias Baixas region of Galicia in 2011. Can't wait to get back. I plan to walk from Oporto and am still weighing up the merits of the Coastal and Central routes, the former having less 'elevation gain' whereas the central seems to have many picturesque towns and villages. I'm managing 10kms in a little over 2 hours and will work up the distance this year. I don't intend to rush the pilgrimage - that would be inviting trouble at my age - but will plan sufficient time to 'smell the flowers' and dally awhile in the villages allowing maybe 14 days for the journey rather than the 10/11 often quoted'. I intend staying in a mixture of hostels/albergues/hotels as they present themselves. Currently am researching the most suitable 'equipment' for my journey and find the information available on this forum, particularly accommodation recommendations, particularly valuable and find the helpfulness of the members, most comforting. Look to enjoy the Caminho as much as you and your husband did. Bom Caminho, Mel
