Hi Mark,

The problem with Orisson is that it gets fully booked way in advance. For April you need to be booking now. You cannot just decide on the day and get a bed there.

Buen Camino,

Mike

I will be leaving out of St. Jean on the 9th (April). I contacted Orisson. They replied that they would not take a reservation because they were not sure if they would be open. They told me to call a day prior.

Hello Mark, Karen, Jesper, Sharni and the rest,
I hope to begin from SJPP around April 7 or 8. I look forward to seeing you out there!

I had the same experience with the Orisson Refugio. ("Call the day before to see if we are open") -- what is the alternative if indeed Orisson is closed?

If the Napoleon route is open I am sure Orisson will be open. Getting a bed will probably be a problem. The options would be: get a bed at Orisson, stop short at Hunto, or walk to Roncesvalles. If the Napoleon is closed walk the Valcarlos: get a bed in Arneguy or Valcarlos or walk to Roncesvalles.

I am a newbie, so maybe some more experienced pilgrims will give their advice.

Here are some accommodation possibilities from Gronze.com for Valcarlos. http://www.gronze.com/navarra/valcarlos

The municipal albergue is great and open all year. Heated with 24 places it has a fine kitchen. You can reserve a space by email or telephone.
See http://www.gronze.com/navarra/valcarlos/albergue-municipal-valcarlos.

Buen camino!

We have tried to book Orisson for April 14. Were told to call a few days prior to make reservations because of uncertainty of weather that time of year. What gives? Buen Camino

Thanks

Thanks for the tip Mike, just sent a booking request but looking at other comments will probably have to wait until the week before.

I made my reservation for Orrison early in Dec for April 14. There were no problems, just took a bit of time to get a response. I contacted them five days ago to change to April 13 and they responded saying that was okay. No mention of possibly not being open?? I have wondered what happens in the event of the Napoleon Route being closed, does anyone know if Orrison refunds your payment?

Will try again. Thanks

Coming from Southern California. SJPDP start on 7/8 April, depending on the weather. See you all along the way. I'll be the Tongan looking Filipino.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

I tried booking back in December for the 2nd Apr & was told to contact them the day before. I think they don't like to have to deal with refunds.

Hi Rhonda, we met at the WA group meeting a couple of months ago. You are getting so close to departure now, excited? I'm 10 days behind you!

Hi Cathy, yes so close now. Only 12 days until we leave Perth, really need to sort out what I'm taking. How is your planning going?

Pretty good, I think I'm ready. Mind you, those pics of the snow in Roncesvalles in the Pilgrim in Shorts thread had me running out to buy some good gloves and reassess my clothes! I think I'm okay, I've got layers and figure if I need to I'll just put them all on. I lived in New Zealand for six years so very familiar with layering. It will be nice to share stories and experiences when you get back. I get back home on the 26th May and I guess there will be a meeting on the 29th so maybe I'll see you there. Have a wonderful, wonderful time!!
