La Casona del Peregrino Hostel in Llanes has a problem…

I want to first start with the positives. I was greeted well and shown the facilities promptly. Enjoyed the beach and the wonderful town that is Llanes. Feeling exhausted I passed out early and immediately.

I woke up to sounds in the street as it’s very central and also felt crawling in my back and neck. After some adjustment I realize everyone else is scratching and shuffling in their bunk so I decide to get up and see if my nightmare is true. Upon lifting my pillow 3-4 adult bed bugs scurry around and I brush a couple more off my sleeping bag. I kill a few, for vengeance and for proof, and look around to see the bunk is crawling with every size of beg bug. I head to the front to see if I can get another accommodation or refund but the night clerk tells me it’s impossible. I will say, I was offered to stay on the extra couch in the front office which I had to take as I couldn’t sleep outside because of the rain (I would have otherwise). No one get a good nights rest after being awoke that way.

The staff didn’t seem to take the issue seriously and acted surprised there were bed bugs present. Reading reviews afterwards it is clear they blame or scapegoat their customers for this issue. Saying it is because people don’t keep their bags in the lockers (one of many rules of the hostel) and bug come from the forest… okay. These bugs live in the walls and floor of especially wooden building which the building and bed frames are all made of. They say they disinfect and clean everyday but that’s the bare minimum for any hostel. There are further measure needed for an infestation of this size. I had a friend in the other bunk room who was attacked all night as well so this is not an issue of one bunk or one room alone.

My rant/warning is concluded, I have steam washed all my belongings and have plans to buy permethrin soon. Any other advice for avoiding these encounter are appreciated. Buen camino.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
😵‍💫

Geeez.....maybe I just won't sleep anywhere next time. Just walk for 30 days with the odd stop for a coffee.
(actually, I have had very little contact with buggers and no bites in over a decade of Camino adventures)

I use Alltrails a lot here in the US, in Iceland, on the Via Podiensis and a bit on the CF. Will it be useful on the Norte? For example, people here say the "warm up" from Biarritz to Irun (or...

Tomorrow I fly to Bilbao to start my 5th stint on the Camino. I did the Frances in three parts (2016, 2017 and 2022). Last year I did the Portuguese from Porto. I did the first 200 km of the...
I thought I had this all figured out, but I have ended up with 2 train tickets from San Sebastian (I don't even know if it's the airport or the town) to Irun, instead of ONE that goes all the way...
