Hi everyone,

I will be arriving in Santiago de Compostela on Christmas Day. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is Christmas Mass being held at the cathedral? Thanks in advance.

Buen Camino,

A day without Mass in Santiago is like a day without sunshine, there is always a daily Mass, I'm sure there will be some form of Christmas Mass.

Look out for what is called "misa del gallo", basically a midnight mass, but often starting already a bit earlier ~23:00. I am sure Santiago Cathedral will have one, don't forget, apart of it being the pilgrims church, it is also a parish church!
Buen Camino! SY

The Cathedral isn't a parish church and therefore amongst other things there are no weddings or funerals.

All of the masses of Christmas are celebrated in the cathedral. Midnight Mass is of course on Christmas Eve. The masses on Christmas Day are as normal.

The Pilgrims' Office is usually closed on Christmas Day - arriving pilgrims should report to the Sacristy for their sello and Compostela.

Best regards

John

Sorry for having been a bit too general and not precise enough. What I meant with 'parish church' was simply 'a church where the locals / neighbours also go to', not a parish church in the strict sense of the word. Thanks for making that clear, will take more care in future, SY

Sorry to have been so short and pedantic! Often pilgrims think that the cathedral is a parish church where they can get married, have babies baptised and so on. It isn't. But the Corticella Chapel is. Although nowadays it is physically joined to the cathedral it has always been a separate parish church and it has its own Parish Priest appointed by the Archbishop not the cathedral. The Corticella is the Church for Pilgrims, Strangers and interestingly "people from the Basque country".

PS where exactly is the Vasque country

Thanks for the information ( Below) John.

I got into town on 23 December last year and had my "uno del Reino Unido, desde Sevilla" read out at the pilgrims' mass on Xmas eve (I think there were 14 of us altogether that day). It was wonderful, as was the high mass (with cardinal and botafumeiro) for midnight mass.
