Clarisas Convent, Vilar de Astrés, Ourense

I just had a wonderful experience visiting the Catholic Clarisas Convent. See location https://maps.app.goo.gl/vNAFtjk8AyvNUd7r5

I wasn't doing the Camino this time,I just wanted to buy their homemade biscuits/cakes. The hospitality there is amazing. I was greeted with a warm welcome by Sister Ana Maria,the abbess is Sister Ángeles. I was treated to hot chocolate and a biscuit tasting trying their whole selection in the process! They were all delicious tasty and crunchy ; some are made with almonds,one had cream too.
The Convent is only 350 metres off the Camino and is sign posted. This is the stage on leaving Ourense to Cea. For those who know there's two routes out of Ourense after you've crossed the awesome Roman Bridge before you get to the Railway Station. So take the route to the right when you reach Santiago Church,from there the Convent is about an hour or so walk (5 km). Pilgrims can stop and rest for a cupper and get your credential stamped. You can always leave a donation or buy some biscuits. They even allow pilgrims to stay the night too but worth confirming before getting there.

I have not been fortunate enough to discover the convent--and I've stayed in Ourense three times. What has drawn me there is the wonderful hot springs along the river. They do wonders for stiff and aching muscles and are free of charge. I will add the convent (and the biscuits) to the reasons I plan to return to Ourense again in 2024. Glad you are a regular in Ourense.. that sounds like a cunning plan. You must visit Ribadavia too.

The assortment featured does look excellent and significantly better than the baked goods I’ve bought from several convents in the past.

I do however have it in good authority that the bread baked by certain Scot’s-Irish nuns takes some beating.
