Class of 2015

I will be a member of the class of 2015. :)

Hi, I am Joe, from southern California. I am new to this forum and planning to walk the El Camino, mostly alone, starting at SJPdP around mid-April of 2015.
Will probably fly into CDG and take the train to SJPdP. Anyone going that time of year who would like to team up for the early part of the trip?
My youngest son is planning on walking part of the Camino with me before he has to go back to work. In reading the posts it looks like I am way back on the power curve as far as planning is concerned. About the only thing I have going for me is a limited knowledge of Spanish and being in fairly good physical condition. Am I too late in booking rooms in the bigger cities?
I wouldn't worry too much about prebooking while on the Camino at that time of year. But from what I've heard booking overnight in Bayonne on your way to SJPDP and in SJPDP before you start is a good idea.

I am going to try and leave SJPdP the first of May 2015. I have found a friend in Mobile that has just completed the journey this year so I hope to get the information needed to get the right equipment . I am going to try and complete the journey by the first of June. I have one of my children that wants to vacation in southern Spain after I finish so I will meet up with them. Hope you have a great adventure and maybe we will meet on the road.

Stephen
I'll be starting around the 7th our paths may cross.

How did you find the weather this year in May and June? I plan to start first week of May.

I did have plenty of rain. After the 4th or 5th day of rain I just gave up worrying about it and dealt with the rain. After that it did not bother me as it just became the norm. Only had one cool morning and that was in Poncebadon... Good luck to you and buen Camino my friend.

My wife and I are starting the Camino Frances on March 5, 2015 from Leon. We'll be too far ahead for our paths to cross but I just wanted to say hi!

Ron and Michele

My Dad and I will walk from Leon on March 4th. Fairly good odds that we will see you on the Camino.

Let's stay in touch. Maybe we can meet for drinks prior to you leaving. :)
We arrive in Leon on the 3rd and start our walk on the 5th.

I have not gotten a start date yet, still making travel arrangements. I am going to spend a few weeks in Gaucin after and have my youngest son wanting to come over for about a week. Trying to coordinate everything. Would be nice to run into you on the journey.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
I plan to start from SJPdP on 3 April. going to Barcelona on the 1st. April and by train to Pamplona if I couldnt same day, next day by bus to SJPdP.

The 1730 bus from Pamplona started on March 30, 2014, but in previous years, bus service to SJPdP did not start until May. ALSA can be very inconsistent in its routes, and often does not announce the start of a route until after it has started! Good luck on an April start for the bus next year!

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Plans nearly firmed up for an April 6th start at SJPDP. If all goes well, I should have at least 40 days to get to SdC.
I look forward to meeting Forum members as we travel along the Way together. I will be walking slowly, this gives me more time to meet and greet.
Buen Camino,

Hi, I'm in the very beginning embryonic stages of conceiving my first Camino for sometime next year. I've been lurking on this site for a short time only. I haven't figured out how to choose my route yet. In fact, if you can point me to a good thread about the various routes, I'd appreciate it. I've looked around, but not come up with one. I plan on taking at least a month to do my walk. No idea what my departure dates will be. I'm not terribly fit, so I'll be spending the year in training and walking, as well as cutting weight. I'll be walking alone. I heard about the Camino approximately five years ago and was very interested then. Haven't given it much thought since. Suddenly, the idea came out of nowhere and sat on my consciousness in a very demanding way over the last month and it seems it is both time to do this and imperative. So, even though I have no money, no equipment, no experience, I'm self-employed and will have to meet my maintenance expenses here before I go, my business will feel my absence and likely the impact will take a few months to recover from as I build clientele back up, and the entire thing seems impossible, unlikely, and even irresponsible, it also feels like none of that matters. At all. I can't wait.

Have fun planning, and buen camino! Don't let a camino be too disruptive of your life and routine. They both go on beyond the pilgrimage. The experience can be a transformation, and the transformation is best when you integrate it with family, work, and life. Be sure to have fun doing it!

Ah, Falcon, I can see how you might have had a concern reading this bit. The thing is, I'm running up on 57 here. If I don't do a little Life Disruption now, I'll miss my chance to change things up as well as the opportunity to put some feet on my lifelong travel dreams. It's apparent to me if I continue to wait until there are ample resources or time, I'll never hit the road. Frankly, there's a good chance I'm as retired as I ever will get, so I might as well create a window for myself now while I'm healthy and strong enough. And keep going from there! Should I choose to, I could work with clients by Skype and if I end up planning a trip longer than four weeks, I may very well do so. This trek is a way to build a couple of things into my current life as well: passion, excitement, fitness, a goal to kedge towards, reflection on what wants to be born next, a direction for the next 30 years, and the joy of stretching into the impossible despite the ever present urge to be self-limiting.

Hello Class of 2015!

I'll be walking from SJPDP to Finisterre & Muxia in May & June 2015 ~ I have seven weeks to complete my journey. I'll be flying in from Canada to Paris somewhere around May 8-10th. Paris to SJPDP - fly/train or train/train ?? -Haven't made that decision yet. I'll get back to Paris from SdC via Hendaye ~ this looks to be an inviting layover spot! The only other real decision I've made so far is to break up my first few days by stopping in Orisson.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all ! If anyone is looking for a train/plane buddy.. let me know.. safety in numbers !

My May 7th start just became a reality today. My travel agent was looking out for any early bird special and came up with two today. Saved $700 on a Singapore Airlines flight with the shortest travel time from Australia. 24hrs. Brisbane/Singapore/CDG. I really feel like Im going now. Now all I gotta do is book a train from CDG to Bayonne and then on to SJPDP with SNCF. But that will have to wait til it gets closer and they release schedule times.

Hi shirley. My husband and I are also planning our journey for May/June of 2015. We are from alberta, canada. Hope to meet up.
Hello Shirley, I plan on leaving from SJDP the first of May. I have been looking for a way to get there and it appears that there are a number of people going to Paris and going from there to SJDP. I am interested in connecting with other pilgrims to travel with. I am somewhat flexible in start dates at this point in planning , I have one of my children that wants to meet up in southern Spain in June for a holiday . I have been thinking about the el camino for several years and was going to do it when I retired. I retired at the end of last May. I am active in that I cycle and swim regularly but haven't been walking. I am going to start soon to break in my shoes and condition myself for the trip. I am spending a lot of time now trying to decide on the gear I will need and I am really in need of all the help I can get. Good thing I have time on my side. I have a brother who is in the Hood River valley area, he and his wife run the Rasmussen farms over there. I haven't been to Oregon since I thumbed around the US and Canada in the early 70's.

Hi Bobby!
I have a ticket from Vancouver to Paris on May 9th and will most likely be starting my walk from SJPDP on May 10th. I had originally thought to fly home via Paris, but changed my mind and will be flying thru Madrid instead.

Follow your dream and make it whole. When you finally start, you can walk by yourself if your choose to, but you are never alone on the Camino. That is part of the magic. When you do your research this forum, please pay a lot of attention to the threads about foot care. Once your are addicted to go then it becomes all about the feet after that.

Thank you, Dennis. It feels like the journey has already begun as a negotiate the inner workings that are craving the Camino. Even before I started thinking about which route to take, I started collecting links to foot care posts here. You guys are great! I think the first place to start is a visit to a podiatrist to have that long overdue talk about flat feet and pronated ankles, hoping that, in combination with gleaning blister prevention wisdom here, will address structural issues and reduce the probability of injury.

A friend of mine who did the Camino last year gave me some great advice. Get all the relevant details you need, but dont over research it. Learn to go with the flow.

I walked the Camino Frances in 2012 to Santiago and then on to Finisterre and Muxia. I am returning June 23, 2015 to hike the Camino del Norte.

I think that it is a great plan. You can't over research foot care. There is a thread called "Day two ended up with two big blisters" that I encourage you to check out. It is painful to read but it clearly makes the point that your feet are very important for enjoying the Camino.

I've seen this thread as well as another with exercises to strengthen the feet. Great resources. Very sobering.

It is very unfortunate for this person to be having so many problems.

I would guess that when you start your quest, you will be grateful for all of your preparation in advance.

Please dont get the assumption that I was suggesting you take a half hearted approach to "Foot care". I too last year when thinking of doing this trip consulted a Podiatrist to see if my old slabs of meat (feet) would be up to the task. My comment was more of a , dont over research what you can do as this sometimes leads to, too many solutions that in the end only serves to confuse you and eventually drives you away from your main goal.

I hadn't connected your comment to directly to foot care at all, but received it as approaching all things in balance. Was your trip to the podiatrist helpful?

It was helpful. I had a bad motorcycle accident 29 years ago that left me with a very small limp (quite unnoticeable to anyone but me), and she did suggest orthotics in the extreme. However she said good innersoles and quality boot with good support would be fine. I hike regularly and do this with no adverse foot problems.

Hunsta Hello,

We are cool. Sorry to hear about your accident and happy to learn that you worked out a solution. I wear otrhotics as well.

I realized when I walked the Camino earlier this year that the only thing I really needed to have in my back pack was a spare set of feet.:( I was walking 3-4 hours a day in preparation before I came to the Camino. On day three on the, I had blisters on my heels. That what has prompted me to make so many comments about foot care.

Maximum respect to a guy that is preparing for his 7th Camino.

Oh my goodness. Maybe I should change that. Thats suppose to read 7th(ish) of May. At the time I joined the forum I didnt have the date pegged down. So Im a pure Camino virgin so to speak. However I have done a considerable amount of walking in my time.

I love that you took care of yourself and have continued to pursue your dreams.

Frankly, other than taking care of my feet, my biggest concern is I won't want to come back. At all. I'm still a decade away from getting Social Security, but it has occurred to me that it is more than enough to fund endless trekking if I didn't have housing expenses to maintain stateside.

Home now from Sahagun since 1.5 weeks and ready for new plans. Looking into finishing the Frances from Sahagun to Santiago in May '15 and then start the del Norte in September '15.
Also looking into offering myself as a "starter guide" for the SJPDP to Pamplona stretch for the months in between as I turned out to be quite good at getting people back on their feet/on track during the Pamplona to Sahagun stretch. Still pondering if it will be just as rewarding professionally though.

I am hoping to start from Roncesvalles the second or 3rd week of May
Will be flying into Bilbao from the UK as it is easier for me to get to than Biarritz..
Anyone else thinking along the same lines please let me know and perhaps we can discuss?

Greetings fellow Peregrinos/ Peregrinas!
I cannot believe this is actually going to be a reality but I just got approval to take a leave of absence from work to walk the Camino next year! I wanted to leave beginning to mid Sept 2105 but a family wedding is happening on Sept 25 so it looks like I will need to start earlier. I am now looking at Mid August, possibly 8/12 SJPDP and taking up to 40 days to SdC ending around 20th or so of Sept. I have been interested in going for years, but I just thought it would be impossible to get the time off to do it. I was out on a hike a few months ago and just decided why not try? Why not make a special request and see if it is approved. My husband will likely do part of it with me. One or both of my sons may also do part, My brother is also considering joining for part of all, but also my father who is 73 tomorrow would love to join us for part or I may end up doing it all on my own which I think would be great too. I think whoever is meant to be there will be there. Looking forward to getting to know you all better in the months to come

Lol that movie had the same effect on me... I started researching the camino almost immediately after watching movie... That was over a year ago...and I am still driving my family and friends crazy with all my "camino talk and research" oh and my count down! Lol ... June 2015!!
Hey there.
I am another one that got " hooked" by the film. My job had me involved in part of the advertising and promo for the film so say it at a screening with Martin Sheen there telling stories about the filmmaking. I knew then I would walk it "some day". My father has also been captivated by the Camino and hopes to be able to do a least part of the Journey with me! I am gping a little later... last summer , early fall so will likely not bump into you but Buen Camino!

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
im looking to start after May 11th , are you going alone ?

Angie T,

With that start date you are most unlikely to be starting alone if you are leaving from StJdP. Try not worry about not having someone to walk with, you'll likely be falling over each other in the first three days:p

Hi everyone my name is Jenny and I too am going to be a member of the class of2015! I am walking alone; it has been a dream of my sisters but she is unable to do it so now it is my dream and I will do it for the two of us I have booked flights to Paris and a few days stop in Bordeaux on my way I plan to begin my walk on 30th April or 1st May. Seems to me lots of people beginning on 1st May. I am both terrified and excited never done anything like this before!!!

I'm hoping to go all the way to Finisterre from SJPDP next May..Any one know of transportation back to Santiago from Finisterre? Cheers!!
Primus, it's an easy bus ride back to Santiago. There's a bus drop off/pick up area in the center of town. Can't miss it. (If you avoid transport the rest of the Camino, it will feel odd to be in a vehicle again.)

Hello! I am new to this and am not sure how to make the decision about whether to tackle this hike or not. I honestly know about the Camino because of the movie The Way. Rarely does a movie affect me so much; but I felt like I needed to walk this trail. I am not sure about many things. I guess first and foremost, how much of a handicap is it that I don't speak Spanish? Should that keep me from the trail? I have oodles of other questions, (packing, currency, traveling with someone, ...) but am enjoying reading the posts here. You are all very inspirational to me!
I guess any advice for a newbie would be appreciated greatly.
Tiz
Strange how a movie can do that to you, huh? To make you feel that you NEED to do it. For me it was seeing an article about the Camino in the local paper, followed by "The Way" coming to the local theater a few months later. (Watch for the documentary "Walking the Camino-Six Ways to Santiago" that should be out on video in November) Having done the Camino two years ago, I'd say keep studying the Spanish, but don't let lack of knowledge dissuade you from doing the Camino. Wonderful people living and working on the Camino are used to dealing with someone who doesn't speak their language. Plus, there's a very good chance you'll form a bond with someone who does speak Spanish and they will help you out. As for currency-plenty of ATM's along the way. My biggest decision right now is sleeping bag related. Last time (sept/oct.2012) I used only a fleece bag liner. I'm debating going lighter, simply because I remember how warm some of the albergues were. When you have a room full of bodies, it can become too warm. But that's just me.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

so your not nervous to start in SJPP?
have you done that part before ?
No reason to be nervous, Angie and you will find pilgrims to walk with right away in SJPP.
I walked solo by choice from SJPP (age 58) to half-way through the Frances (stopped only by a freak accident). It takes a lot of effort to remain solo as there are many to meet and enjoy company with. I went up the Napoleon. I would decide on a date and if you are going up the Napoleon and want reservations at Orisson, make them now. In April 2014 it wasn't too crowded - but not empty either. A beautiful time to walk. Buen Camino.

Hi! I'm from near Boulder, Colorado USA. I plan to start my Camino in 2015. I plan to start the CF in SJPDP and go all the way to at least SdC. My husband doesn't have the time for such a long Camino so he will meet up with me for about the last two weeks. We're still deciding when to start the Camino. We're trying to avoid the hot days of July and August, but the warmer weather of the other months keeps our packs lighter. All the cold weather in May this year has made us rethink starting even in mid May, but perhaps this strange weather won't repeat itself in 2015. I really want to walk the Napoleon route over the Pyrenees, but this is already a lesson learned. Limited planning seems to be the best approach to the Camino.

I read something about the Camino almost a year ago and felt the calling. I felt if would be really neat to do, but not something I would likely ever do in this busy world. However, the calling has persisted and here I am! :D

Thanks to Ivar and everyone who contributes to this forum. Along with the Brierley bookI have learned so much about the Camino. Now to work on the training. I'm up to about 6.5km but did do a 9.5km walk a few weeks ago.

Buen Camino!
Hi, my son and I are doing the Camino in April 2015 and we lived in Boulder from 2000-2008. Good luck and Buen Camino!

Hi all,

My son Gabriel and I (Steve) will do the CF in April 2015. We arrive in Madrid on April 1 and take the train to Pamplona and then bus / taxi to SJPdP. Plan on starting our journey the morning of April 3. Chose April to avoid heat and crowds hearing that in July / Aug there is a rush each day to reach an albergue with space. Hope it is a good choice. We are Americans but long term residents of Hong Kong and are looking forward to meeting fellow pellegrinos on the Way.

Buen Camino!!

Hi Everyone!

My wife Michele and I are planning to walk the CF in 2015 as well!
Our plan is to start in early March and walk from Leon. We'd love to walk the whole Camino but our work schedules make it impossible for now (only 10 more years until retirement!). We're a little concerned about the weather but since we're from Vancouver, B.C. we're used to the rain!
We love the forum and have found it to be an invaluable resource in planning our trip. We recently attended a local Camino meeting as well.

Buen Camino Everybody!

Ron

Ron:
My wife and I walked this past March starting in Roncesvalles. We had a bit of snow, a bit of hail and some rain but overall the weather was acceptable. We are also Canadians from Mississauga so walking on 0 C weather was not uncomfortable. Don't worry too much about the weather. You will find some albergues and hostels closed especially before March 15 but we never had trouble finding a room.
I was 70 years old at the time and I survived so it should be a piece of cake for a youngster like you.
Buen Camino!

Looking forward to joining the class of 2015. We'll be starting 4 May 2015 in SJPDP.

When we first planned to walk the CF 8-9 months ago, it all seemed so far away. But I've just booked our flights and first 2 nights accommodation and now it all seems so real! And we really haven't started training yet! Bits of walking off and on (we bought most of our gear 9 months ago). But now we have the motivation to start some real training, because we can see the clock counting down

Booking the accommodation was interesting. Many hotels in SJPDP seemed to be fairly heavily booked already. Same in Roncesvalles. This site was useful.
http://www.roncesvalles.es/directorio/index.asp?id=listado&cat=hotel&lg=frn
After Roncesvalles we'll 'free wheel' as far as accommodation goes. Who can tell where we'll end up and when...

We hope to make it all the way to SdC. We've allowed ourselves 48 days. We'll need it, as we are really not very fit. If we manage it faster then we might go on to Muxia or there again, the 'Boss' may decide enough is enough, as we'll pop over to the UK and Ireland to visit family on the way home.

Look forward to seeing some of you en route

Shall be flying into CDG on the 4th and hope to get to SJPDP by the 5th. and hope to start by the 7th. So how booked out is SJPDP? My problem is Im not sure what time Ill get to SJPDP due to the fact I can get any train schedule out of SNCF this far out for May. So Ill either get to Bayonne on the 4th and have to stay there the night. Or Ill just make SJPDP at night of the 4th.

So how booked out is SJPDP?

I guess it depends on the type of accommodation you're looking for. We don't plan to use Albergues.
When I just looked on Booking.com, there were 5 Hotels in St Jean with vacancies. But there again, we are talking some time away. so maybe other Hotels are not even posting their vacancies yet.

We only plan to book the first couple of nights. So I checked Roncesvalles. And the main Hotel was already full. But the 'annex' to the Monastery has rooms as does a nice looking pub. Roncesvalles Hotels Website These were not shown on Booking.com Given that Roncesvalles seems to be a bit of a 'choke' point with not much accommodation other than the main Albergue, I thought I would book. It will 'ease us' into the journey and routine knowing we have the first couple of nights booked.

After that, we will let the Camino take over.....

Shall be flying into CDG on the 4th and hope to get to SJPDP by the 5th. and hope to start by the 7th. So how booked out is SJPDP?
Accommodations in early May are not a problem. Your arrival is between French holidays (there are 5 in May). There will be albergue beds in abundance; if you want a hotel, then you can search booking.com on the day you will be arriving, and find something. I like Hotel Ramuntcho.

All good. Just secured me a room at Chambres d'Hotel Garicoitz. Ill be winging it for the rest of the way, but just wanted a couple of good nights after the long 23hr flight then near 8 hours all up on trains, before I hit the road.

Back for another stint starting May 9th, this time from Belorado for 2 weeks.
I should get to Astorga or Ponferrada.
I hope to see some of you late-April starters!

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
APRIL/May

I haven't decided exactly when to leave for Spain. I want to walk the Pyrenees, but know better than to hike through bad weather. It's nearing the time to nail down a date. Have any of you decided for sure yet?

I believe it can be a bit rainy in April, but May is starting to be very popular. Either way

Seems like a bit of a Lottery really. I spent weeks reading and researching. But I think it comes down to a higher probability of cooler/wetter v hotter/dryer. i.e. April/May v June/July. But as all the old hands here advise, you just can't predict what the weather will be like.

I tossed a coin and thought I'd rather be a bit too cool than too hot....... But we'll be prepared for whatever weather turns up

Hi I'm Inge and I'm either planning to do the Camino Frances starting in SJPdP or the Camino Portugues starting in Lisbon (this will probably depend on the weather and how busy the routes are in the fall). I'm planning to go late September/early October depending if all goes well with my master degree :). Hopefully I'll be able to walk to Finisterre this time as well, since blisters and time kept me from going last time.

Buen Camino!

John,
This has been the most helpful message yet. I am researching solomon trail shoes as well as keen hiking sandals. (I love keen's wide toe box) It will take every ounce of strength NOT to overpack, but I hear you loud and clear: minimum weight = a happy hiker! Thank you so so much! You have been incredibly helpful! I'll undoubtedly be in touch with numerous other questions.
Thanks again -
Best,
Tiz

Yes i am!!!

I'm in for June, 2015 - meeting up with a small group in Pamplona - my first and hopefully, not my last Camino! Very nervous but very excited. Not worried about the walk itself, just getting there from Houston, Texas! :)

Spanish lessons 101:
I am a member of Audible Books, and I decided this month to order Pimsleur Digital Spanish. I want to be able to learn a little. Anyway, I have found this to be an excellent addition to my training walks. I plod along repeating phrases to my book (each lesson is about 1/2 hour long). It took me 4 days to learn session 1 and I really feel it is helping me. I thought I'd drop a note about it, in case some of you wanted to brush up or learn. I figure with six months to go, I should be able say "yo hable unpoco espanol."

I'm also pushing back my date toward May 1st to meet some of you guys. I'll get a little jump on you, but plan to take 40 days, so you'll probably catch me. Buen Camino!

I found an app called DuoLingo to be very helpful. As for your new start date, seems its going to be quite a forum meet up around that time. I suggest as it get closer someone should initiate a Class of May 2015 thread so we can all get a look at who we'll have to look out for.

I will be heading over 28th February to start :)

I walked the Complete Camino Frances April/May 2013. I will walk it again 2015. Plan to arrive in SJPD around May 7th as I complete the Le Puy route which I will start on 3 April 2015. I guess I will see some of you. Not a blister last time but who knows next time and will my boots hold up for a 1 600km journey.
I start my foot preparation next week and my training in earnest.
I will only plan accomodation for the first few days from Le Puy en Valey.
So keep an eye out for this grandfather of 10.

Thanks for this. I've been looking for apps and hadn't come across this one. Giving it a go right now to see what I think. DuoLingo has an interesting back story, as well. http://www.fluentin3months.com/duolingo/ I'm also going to rent audio Spanish lessons from my local library. All that high school Spanish one million years ago, such a shame I didn't keep it up, but unfortunately our focus was almost entirely on written work and not spoken and listening work.

So keep an eye out for this grandfather of 10.

Gday mate. Where in oz you hailing from Cejanus? You wont be the only grandfather in the group (although I tell myself Im too young to be a grandparent. Im so deluded. LOL) Seems we shall start the same day.

G'day hunsta,
I am from Perth, WA? Yes we may run into one another. I'll keep an eye out for you.

Last time In SJPD I stayed two nights there at Le 'Espirit just across from the Pilgrim's office. I believe it has changed ownership and name but I'm not sure of the new name or contacts. If anyone knows the new name , website, email and phone number I would be really be appreciative of that. I am hoping that they are like the old owners. It was a very friendly place and the communal meals were great and a good way to get to know others who were starting out around th same time.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

This is from Brieley`s 2014 edition guidebook. Has it still in there. Number 3. However may still be the old contact detail. Sorry if it is.

Thanks! However it has changed name. I'm looking for the new name and contact.

Cejanus, sounds like a great plan! What do you do for foot preparation this far out? I'm looking for all the best ways to prepare for my first walk next September.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
My 8th Camino will be a short one .My son and grandsons,8 and 11 will be walking with me from Sarria starting 23rd June 2015.
We have begun taking them on long walks and they are gradually getting used to the idea.Fingers crossed!! :-/
Then off to Scotland to introduce them to their relatives. We are from Perth WA.
I must say though I will miss not doing a long walk.

Greetings, Members of the Class of 2015!

My wife and I are both from the United States, but we reside in Panama, where we work as high school teachers. During Easter Week of 2015, we will be walking The Camino starting in Sarria. We will be in the company of thirteen brave students who also want to give The Camino a try.

I have, however, been bitten by The Camino bug. As a result, I plan to walk again (solo) in Easter of 2016, this time starting from SJPDP.

Here's a little piece I wrote titled "A New Fixation" that tells about my relationship with The Camino . . . so far: http://ssirias2.blogspot.com/2014/09/a-new-fixation.html

I wish the Class of 2015 a Buen Camino.

Just curious. What do you do for 'foot preparation'?
Hi again, my apologies for not getting back earlier. I have been testing the waters of the Pacific at Burleigh Heads.
FOOT PREPARATION that works for me. I live in a hot climate and I spend most of my day wearing thongs. Consequently my feet become very dry and my heals crack. So I spend time walking in the water the Indian Ocean. The water softens them up considerably. At home i sit with my feet in a tub of warm water (don't laugh now) but i add washing up detergent to the water, and then I give my feet and heels a good rub down with a pumice stone. I do this a couple of times each week. I endeavour to get my feet to be very soft. Afterwards I rub Silic 15 Cream into them. (Available in Australia from most Chemist Shops, about $6 - $7) ) Before each walk I also apply the cream and I also do this each day of my Camino.
And I keep my feet soft by wearing shoes and or boots on a regular basis. (I give up the bare feet and thongs in the couple of months leading up to my Camino.)
I also get my feet checked out by a podiatrist. (I wear my boots and socks to the appointment.)
On my preparation walks I wear the two pairs of socks that I will use daily on my Camino. An inner sock and the outer sock.
Before I go for my walk each day I take plenty of time to massage the cream into my feet and especially the heel.
This works for me and I put it down to the cream and making sure that my feet are really, really soft. Not a blister in all my walking thus far.

Happy preparation. Let's know how it goes.

FOOT PREPARATION that works for me.
Awesome, Cejanus! Thanks for the detailed explanation. My feet do the same thing and it was the first thing I started concentrating on. In addition to the pumice stone, I have found nightly use of a black nail file (coarse) helps as well as a combination of applying Salicylic Acid (found in over the counter acne preparations--I use Nuetrogena's ) to help slough off old skin, followed by Gold Bond ointment or Mary Kay's Satin Hands Softener will do the trick. I do it right before bed, put on a pair of socks and drop into the sack. It improves things immediately and will remediate the situation over time. Once the cracks are gone, they'll stay soft and crack free as long as I am doing the nail filing and deep moisturizing routine every night. Which of course, I forget to do after awhile. ;)

I have to say, walking in the Indian Ocean sounds so much more appealing.

Thanks for all the detail.

It's amazing how things have changed over the decades. In a 'previous life' I was required to hike very long distances carrying very heavy packs. Our foot preparation consisted of soaking our feet in Methylated Spirits to 'harden' the skin. Our feet hardened up like leather. Did it work? I don't think so! I seem to remember blisters were a regular hazard. But of course it could have been awful leather boots, the nylon socks, constantly wet feet and a dozen other things.....

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
We are couple from Ontario/Canada and plan to walk the Camino Frances, starting April 1, 2015 from SJPDP. The flight to Paris is booked so no matter what, we will be there. The camino adventure will be our way to celebrate retirement.
We would like to hear from pilgrims that plan to start on or around the same date.

Hi ,
are you planning on doing the whole walk ? are you looking to walk with someone the first few days , I might go In june[/QUOTE

Hi, I'm starting in JSP beginning early May 15. Like yourself, I would like some company walking the fist couple of days, seeing that I'll be travelling sol as well. I'm in the planning stage now and counting now.

@Cejanus there can still be snow on the Aubrac Plateau in early April so take some woollies and have a care. The Le Puy route is very beautiful. Enjoy.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Hello everyone, I am walking mid April 2015 starting in SJPP probably on 18/19th..Hope to walk for 3 weeks and return in September 2015 to complete to Finisterre.....I would be glad to make a few connections on here before then......This is my first Camino and I am in training.

Thanks Kanga. I have the one pair of leggings to go under my pants. I wear a buff and have the usual bits to layer up in. I always wear a hat over this too. I hope this is enough. I don't want to add extra weight - my pack is around 7-8kg without food. (The weight includes does include 1 litre of water.)

Any idea on snow covering the track? I'd hate to wander off into the unknown? The grandkids would be horrified. I walk for many reasons and one of them is to perhaps one day take my grandchildren on a pilgrimage if that's what they would like to do. Who knows perhaps even their parents might come too.

PS. I am a great admirer of Kiwi family and granddad walking with the grandkids. There is something so special and magical about that. It says a lot about family and community.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. I will be walking alone with little command of the French language. I have an App to help me with the language and to practise with so I can endeavour to make myself understood. (But alas will I understand the replies?)

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
@Cejanus the Aubrac Plateau was one place we did manage to stray off the track. It was in an open area without a distinct path so we were being careful and realised pretty quickly we'd gone astray. I haven't experienced it in snow but think it could be difficult. In France where the routes are not quite as obvious as the CF I use a smartphone with a GPS, and off-line Topo maps preloaded (iPhiGeNie) but battery usage is a problem if relying on it for route finding. I only turn it on when lost or confused.

In April I'd be advised by the locals and also try to hook up with other walkers. In Le Puy every night at 6pm between 1 April and 15 October the local Amis usually holds a get together for pilgrims proposing to set out the next day. The meeting is at 29 Rue de Cardinal de Polignac and the contact phone number is 04 71 04 24 55 (I think). They are a friendly mob and will do their best to help with local information. Not much English spoken but as you have found there are some great translation tools available for smartphones if you don't speak French - I have one that records what is spoken and translates both ways (which solves your problem of understanding the reply).
