Credencial

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
You can make your own credencial - fold out like the Spanish one, or book with pages like that from the Confraternity - but it probably won't be accepted by the Santiago Pilgrims' Office for a Compostela. A few years ago they stopped accepting all but the official credencials of various confraternites, approved by them. This was to stop the many different credencials printed by tourist companies etc.

While I have heard different stories over whether or not a do-it-yourself credencial is received in Santiago, remember that the point of the document is to identify you as a bona fide pilgrim rather than a tourist. Membership in a national pilgrims organization is considered to be sufficient indication, as is requesting it from an official source (cathedral, turismo, pilgrims' office, albergue). Best to obtain a kosher document, and take away any doubt or ambiguity.
