We’ve finished day 2 on the Norte. Saw very few pilgrims in Irun. Walked with one pilgrim to San Sebastian and saw only two others. Sat for an hour having leisurely lunch at Pasaia. Didn’t see a single pilgrim walk by to the ferry.

Saw a few more pilgrims today from San Sebastian. Maybe 15, mostly from Spain and a couple from France. Lots of day hikers.

We booked ahead to Bilbao because of holiday season. Because of Covid we’re staying in pensions and avoiding communal accommodations. Prices are exceptionally high - double or triple the estimates given on Gronze and other usual references.

Despite the few pilgrims, our walking companion could not find anywhere to stay in Zarautz. She had to carry on to Getaria. Hopefully this will change away from the holiday-makers hot-spots!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
We start the Norte from Biarritz on Aug 13....we use Caminoways Tours so all of our accommodations are set. However, it sounds like it will be very quiet.

Buen Camino!!

It sure seems that depending on when you leave and where you are dictates how many pilgrims are walking in the general vicinity. That always. seems to be the case but now more than ever in the age of Covid.
