The 2022 drought that affected Iberia and Mediterranean France is continuing into 2023, and it seems to be getting worse.

French Catalonia has had no rain in over a year, and now for the first time, there are water restrictions being implemented where I live, on the French Riviera near the French-Italian border. It is the first time in my life that such restrictions have been put in place locally, and I've been here over 40 years !!

Pilgrims on any of the Mediterranean coastal Ways to Santiago or Rome and those on the Catalan Ways and other routes leading up from the Mediterranean, and perhaps Spanish routes generally outside Galicia and south of the Cantabrian mountains, should be aware, not only of the likelihood of heat and so on and perhaps dried up water fountains along their routes (so be more careful with carried water than usual) but also of the potential risk of fires in the woodland areas, and prepare to be reactive to both risks.

Be careful out there !! And be considerate to the farmers and peasants who are the worst affected by these conditions ...

“Workers have died due to heat strokes. Now we are undertaking legislative changes so people are not forced to work in those conditions,” Ms Díaz added.
