First Camino this summer (Camino Primitivo)

Hello everyone,

I’m thankful I stumbled on this community, I’ve been wanting to walk the Camino for years I just made a decision to try to make it happen this summer.

I’m planning to walk the Camino Primitivo, in either early June or late July (depends on when I can get the time off). I will only have ~16-17 days or so, and I was really hoping to include Finisterre and Muxia. I see most Primitivo plans call for 14 days from Oviedo to Santiago, so I’m hoping *maybe* I can shave a day or two off that. But I’m going in to my planning with flexibility being a priority. I will do what I can.

As with other new pilgrims, I’m trying to sift through all of the planning information so generously provided, from routes to what to pack (still pondering the sleeping bag and poles questions, haha). I’m also reaching out to a local Camino group and starting to prepare physically, I’ve got my shoes and merino socks and am breaking them in.

Hi, rorr99, Great choice!

I walked the Primitivo in September, I had a similar amount of time as you have and also considered finishing at the coast!

With the time I had, I looked at the distances between each stage and worked out a route that was possible within my timeframe!

I came up with two options regarding how far I walked each day/final destination!

Option 1. Average walking distances (25-35km) Finish Camino in Santiago, relax, take some day trips!

Option 2. Some longer distance stages, including a 45km!!
Allows enough time to continue onto Finisterre/Muxia,
Catch flight day after arriving in Finisterre!

It’s has some really stunning stages!
Definitely my favourite Camino so far!

Regarding training for the Primitivo, if you’re a gym goer, don’t miss leg day!

By all reports (I haven't walked it myself yet, it's planned for me this summer) the Camino Primitivo is one of the more physically challenging routes. So I highly recommend what you propose in terms of planning with flexibility in mind and listening well to your body. You don't want to push yourself so hard making the extra days that something breaks. I'd consider the walking on to the coast as a hoped for bonus. If it happens - great! If it doesn't, you still completed the Camino and - hey, you look young - there will be plenty of opportunities to add it on to a future Camino.
